Iron the collar on the reverse side next time
it seems to be the stitching that catches it worse.

Hi Mumto2,
I think that once you get those marks on the shirt you really need to give it a rub with a bar of soap and stick it back into the wash.
It sounds like something is stuck to the sole plate of your iron. There's an older thread that should help with that so I'll add your thread to it.

I've successfully used Hob-brite (stuff for cleaning ceramic hob) on the iron soleplate.
It's gentle enough not to scratch and works.if i had known then what i know now0 -
Has any one any ideas how to clean the hot plate on the bottom of the iron ??????
Mine has got brown marks on it - usually from where its caught something at slightly too hot a temperature I guess - but i can;t seem to get it off.
Any ideas welcome :rotfl:0 -
I'll add this to the existing thread on iron soleplate cleaning - then you can take a look at suggestions from others

I know this is months after this comment, but just to add my two penn'th
This is because the manufacturers use a synthetic/nylon thread on a cotton shirt
It drives me bonkers that they do this!
But it happens all too often.... you buy a cotton shirt only to find that it's stitched with a synthetic thread.
There's another downside .... that cotton naturally shrinks, but synthetic doesn't. So you find that the garment puckers as the cotton shrinks, but that the thread doesn't! why oh why ......Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

Too many soleplates these days are constructed in a way that means that a scourer will ruin the whole iron, for sure.
Astonish, Hob-rite, Barkeeper's Friend and the W5 Biological Stone (Lidl) are all non-abrasive and will do the trick, however. Having said that, I have a relatively new Rowenta iron with a soleplate I've not seen before. Non-stick but it appears to have a "rough" finish and I'm not sure what to do with that. For a smooth finish, however, use a non-abrasive cleaner to be safe.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
just used MR MUSCLE oven cleaner spray on my soleplate, left it for 10mins and wiped off with a damp cloth. It took off all the stuff that was stuck on my iron, worked a treat. This was on a stainless steel soleplate.0
