I am looking to travel to London (from Portsmouth) on the Tuesday after the bank holiday (30/08/11) and return the same day.
It would be for x 2 adults + x 4 children (aged 5 - 11) to go up to the Dr Who exhibition @ Olympia (W14 8UX).
Now I know that the best prices / deals go months in advance, so would appreciate any assistance with options (bus / train) as this is a fairly recent decision and I am looking for the best options (in true MSE style).
I have looked into hiring a 7 seater for the day (we had one but I recently traded it in as we had split up and I couldn't really see the point of keeping a vehicle running for very occasional days out for everyone - not back together but as it was an amicable split we are both taking them all) and that doesn't leave a lot of change from £100, so thought I might try my luck in here.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
TIA

This allows travel using Southern Trains (that covers both Portsmouth and Olympia) all day at off peak times.
A group of four people (adults or children) costs £24.00.
Additional children cost £1.00 each.
So total for two adults and four children = £26.00.
Obviously gives greater flexibility than Advance Singles.
Must be bought online at least seven days before travel.0 -
As well as the options mentioned above, you might like to consider the Southern DaySave offer.

£26.00.
Makes SWT's full price of £128.80 look laughable!0 -
New 15% discount off the price of a Railcard which in turn saves 1/3 off most rail fares. Valid until August 31 2011 when buying online from the main railcard website which includes Senior Railcard, 16-25 Young Person's Railcard and Family & Friends Railcard. It offers a saving of £4.20 on a £28 one year railcard. When purchasing online click 'buy now' and enter the promotional code RAIL15 in the box.:j
If you miss that one, there's a 10% discount valid until 30th september. Code is save10

Hello Guys,
Have been an avid reader of these forums for an AGE! Love the ethos going on here, I just have a quick question.
I am moving to Loughborough University and a friend is moving to Bristol. I have been looking and have found the cheapest return to be:
LOUGH > BRIS = £16.85
BRIS > LOUGH = £16.85
I have a 16-25 rail card, I am wondering would it be better to go through a different site (using National Rail) ?
Also as a student I have limited cash so any help would be FANTASTIC.
Ta very much.0 -
Joeemslie, please don't spam the boards...What's spam? Forum users mustn't post the same forum post more than once on the forum (the only exception is members of the MSE Team; when needed). It's called spamming and most internet forums forbid it.0

If you can leave Bexhill after 9am an Off Peak Return is £72.60.
Quoted fares are for two people, from Southern Railway.
Is Kings Cross you destination, or are you catching another train there?
I ask because it may be cheaper to buy a through ticket.
If you are travelling onwards by Eurostar, get a Return from Bexhill to London Internationl(CIV) at £59.80 for two. You will need to show your Eurostar tickets when getting these.0 -
Kings Cross is the destination - I suppose I could go at 9 it is still expensive though and mods can merge my post just really want an answer didnt know what board to put it in0
