Looking to go to Glasgow by train on 25th August and come back on 29th. Best deal I can find is £114 for an off-peak return (though I can sve £30 through the clubcard voucher deal). Any way to improve this?0

It would help if you said where from, though I think I can guess.
Are you willing to take a slow roundabout route? Splitting in Manchester might save a bit.0 -
Are you eligible for a railcard?malcolmffc wrote: »Looking to go to Glasgow by train on 25th August and come back on 29th. Best deal I can find is £114 for an off-peak return (though I can sve £30 through the clubcard voucher deal). Any way to improve this?
If so that fare (from London?) reduces to around £75.00.
Of course, you need to buy the railcard at £28.00, but I think it can be used with the clubcard deal too. Best to check on that though.0 -
Sorry, yes it's from London. I'm not eligible for a railcard, unfortunately.0

Hello all
I am looking to travel to London (from Portsmouth) on the Tuesday after the bank holiday (30/08/11) and return the same day.
It would be for x 2 adults + x 4 children (aged 5 - 11) to go up to the Dr Who exhibition @ Olympia (W14 8UX).
Now I know that the best prices / deals go months in advance, so would appreciate any assistance with options (bus / train) as this is a fairly recent decision and I am looking for the best options (in true MSE style
).
I have looked into hiring a 7 seater for the day (we had one but I recently traded it in as we had split up and I couldn't really see the point of keeping a vehicle running for very occasional days out for everyone - not back together but as it was an amicable split we are both taking them all) and that doesn't leave a lot of change from £100, so thought I might try my luck in here
.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
TIA

...and then it hits me

On Southern trains you can get some cheap off peak adult tickets via their website and then take the kids for £1.

South West Trains full price leaving Portsmouth Harbour at 1045 or later and Kensington Olympia at 1856 or later:
2 x Adult @ £32.20 + 4 x Child @ £16.10 = £128.80
Discounted with Friends and Family Railcard = £94.90
(I have included the full £28 railcard cost valid for 1 year).
See:

http://www.tesco.com/clubcard/deals/product.aspx?R=2022&bci=4294967191|Travel
plus search MSE for any further offers on the railcard
I'm not sure whether this is OK - someone on here can confirm, but if you say 2 of the children are adults it works out as follows:
4 GROUPSAVE 4 Adult @ £16.10 £64.40 2 GROUPSAVE 4 Child @ £1.00 £2.00Total: £66.40
On www.southwesttrains.co.uk enter Adults 4 and Children 2 and under railcards select GROUPSAVE 4.
See:
http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/groupsave.aspx
If you really want to nail it down and get 1% cashback it can also be done via Topcashback and First Transpennine express.
I don't know the prices via Southern as firespire suggested, they could be cheaper.0 -

Looks ok, under Fares tab:
"Children may travel in the place of Adults on an Adult ticket to take advantage of this offer."0 -
