London Euston to Crewe 08:46 11th Dec Advance single £11.50
Crewe to Manchester Pic Off Peak day Single £10.90 (cheaper if you go by Virgin trains only £8.30, but less available trains)
Total: £22.40

I realise it's probably too late now, for a quicker response next time try asking here as well.

Have you tried looking for through Advance fares? If there are none available, try splitting at Birmingham; there are two companies running from Birmingham to Edinburgh, XC via York and Virgin via Preston.

Another option is so split at Manchester. There are direct trains MKC - MAN provided by Virgin, and direct trains MAN - EDB provided by TransPennine Express.
