    For flexibility you need an off peak return at £60.40 (from Hartlepool)

    You can get it a bit cheaper (just over £50) with a Grand Central anytime return Hartlepool to York and an offpeak return on - but it doesn't give you much flexibility as there are only 4 Grand Central trains a day
    Hi the 4 train choice should be flexible enough just need to work it out now;) thanks again for this as i made a mistake yesterday and booked a day return and have to pay a £10 cancellation fee now:o could have been worse i suppose might have been non refundable god i'm hopeless. thanks again i new i could rely on you lot:beer:

    You can buy walkon tickets (anytime, off peak) on the day at the same price - you don't have to book them. Less chance of mistakes;)

    Given that it's a long wait at York if you don't make the connection, I'd get the previous train from Huddersfield to be safe.

    With an elderly mum in tow you don't want to be rushed

    The fare looks right

  • I've got a number of journeys to book around the Christmas period; are there any codes for The Trainline? That's the site I usually use and I also have my 16-25 railcard, but it would be nice to see if I can save a little more.

    I'm going from Reading to Kidderminster, and usually prefer to avoid Birmingham (too busy and the Virgin trains are always packed). The best I can find is the price I usually pay, £29.05 (plus £1 booking fee) for an open return (it's useful for my train times to be flexible). I have to make this journey twice in December, so even a little saving would be good.

    I'm not sure on split ticketing because the route is always different - sometimes going via Worcester, sometimes Leamington Spa, etc.

    Any help?

    Well for a start you can avoid that £1.00 booking fee by booking with a train operating company. Maybe use London Midland Trains. The tickets will be no more expensive than the trainline.

    Try splitting at Banbury.
    Off Peak Return Reading to Banbury with railcard is £12.75.
    Off Peak Return Banbury to Kidderminster with railcard is £10.90.
    Total = £23.65.
    These assume you are coming back on a different day to your outward leg. If you're coming back the same day, can be cheaper still.

    How about...
    26Nov...
    Dep Darlington 18:56, arr York 19:25. Advance Single = £11.50.
    Dep York 19:29, arr Birmingham NS 21:35. Advance Single = £19.50.
    Total = £31.00. A £3.00 saving.
    Note this is the same train throughout. No need to change trains at York.

    For your Dec 5 trip, a small saving can be made by booking via East Cost Trains website. Down to £36.50.

    Who I think all use the same booking engine

    I'm surprised it doesn't show on the Virgin site (that I can see) - after all it's presumably their offer.

    As you say puzzling

    The Southern website is saying that the fare is not available on trains after the 18.07 train back to Liverpool Lime Street on 4th December. Does that mean you cannot use that London All Zones Travelcard on them trains then?
