Thank you so much for your help ... I think I was being a bit too enthusiastic and trying to book too far in advance
The advance tickets are released for the weekend before yours, so keep checking over the next few day, according to Virgin trains who release the direct advance tickets there up to the 20th Oct.
Virgin normally release advance tickets on a Thrusday afternoon/Friday morning.Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0 -
we got a fantastic deal on a hotel in december, from friday the 10th until tuesday the 14th ... when would you recommend that I look for the deals for the trains for us to go down? it'll be 2 adults again from aberystwyth to london euston ...
oh and wanted to say thank you so much for the advice yesterday, we've managed to save about £50 so far (just on an estimated trip to see how much it'll cost if we wait for the advance tickets), we'll have another look in a couple of weeks time ... which is brilliant :money:0 -

Start looking in mid-September - about 12 weeks ahead. That's the earliest they will be there and it could be later.0 -
Can any one help me with splitting the journey between Taunton and Lancaster on the 20th August? It's one way as I'm getting as lift down. I've never come back up on the train from the South west before!!
Thanks!!:money:0 -

A drawback is you cannot get to Euston before 13:49.
Another point is you can only use London Midland trains with that fare.
Detail from East Coast Trains.
By using Advance Singles, you can get there an hour earlier, the return leg is faster, but the total trip costs £28.40. Still a good saving though.0 -

Thanks!!:money:
First of all look up the through fare.
Then look at splitting at Bristol, Cheltenham and Birmingham. After that maybe Stafford or Crewe or Manchester or some combination - I'm a bit hazier oop north.
And double check that the through fare isn't cheaper......
Sorry don't have time to look it up now.0 -

This is for Taunton->Edinburgh on 20th August (assuming no railcards) I checked all splitting points dzug1 mentioned. Cheapest are below (Manc/Stafford not on main routes suggested by EC)
Through fare via Bristol: £144.00 (a return is a pound more!)
Split Taunton->Bristol TM->Edinburgh: £10 + £130.80 = £140.80 (should be valid all trains)
Split Taunton->Crewe->Edinburgh: £69.30 + £70.50 = £139.80
(only valid when changing at Birmingham New Street)
I also looked up an Advance ticket from Taunton to Edinburgh changing at Birmingham New Street (this seems to be quicker route, although there are slower direct Cross Country trains). The 13.54 depature is £90.00 on the 20th (fares from East Coast website).
Potential splitting points (italics not checked): Bristol Temple Meads, Bristol Parkway, Cheltenham Spa, Birmingham New Street then either
Staying on a direct Cross Country train:
Burton On Trent, Derby, Chesterfield, Sheffield, Wakefield Westgate, Leeds, York, Darlington, Durham, Newcastle, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Dunbar
Changing at Birmingham New Street onto faster Virgin train:
Wolverhampton, Crewe, Warrington Bank Quay, Wigan North Western, Preston, Lancaster, Penrith, Carlisle, Haymarket0 -
Concentrating on the Virgin route (change at Birmingham New Street) I checked splitting at all the places on that. Lancaster seems to be the winner.
Taunton->(Birmingham New St)->Lancaster->Edinburgh: £95.50 + £26.90 = £122.40
Now there might be a way to reduce the £95.50 part of that. Via the Virgin Trains website (it has to be that one) it will let you book "half a return" at £54.15 when bought with another Advance fare in the opposite direction theoretically the cheapest is £20.50. To get that you would look at any dates/times from Lancaster to Taunton and hope to find £20.50 then bin that. Of course you are then committed to catching the booked train from Taunton (which may enable you to find a cheaper single than £54.15 as well) whereas the £122.40 is available on all off-peak trains.
So cheapest->most expensive
1) Taunton->Edinburgh advance fare (check east coast website), currently one for £90
2) Splitting at Lancaster £122.40 (and possibly cheaper via Virgin Trains website)
3) Options in my previous post at around the £140 mark0
