hi, thanks for the reply...
ive figured out that if i bought the family railcard (£23 with code) then the tickets will cost £57.00 return...which is still cheaper than the price you have quoted plus i can use the railcard if ever we travel anywhere else...

Have a look at the Cheap Train Tickets article.
A video on the first page of that article will help you understand split ticketing.
If you could leave Doncaster at either 06:54 or 08:37 (arr Kings Cross at 09:08 or 10:25), Advance Singles = £53.25.
For the return, dep Kings Cross 20:30, arr Donc 22:07, Advance Singles = £30.00.
Therefore total for the two of you return = £83.25.
With a Family and Friends Railcard that fare drops to £47.20.
So £26 for the railcard... total = £73.20.0 -
Dear Saving Experts,
Hope you could help me too in saving some money travelling in the UK. I am fairly new in the UK and appreciate any help regarding booking train tickets at a lower price.
We are a couple and wish to travel from Nottingham to Preston and return.
Forward Journey : 06-Aug-2010 (after 4pm)
Return Journey : 08-Aug-2010 (pm)
We do not have any rail cards or passes. The cost I recieve from my search is about £88.00. I tried splitting the ticket in sheffield, but costs about the same. Can someone please help me reduce the costs?0 -

You could try this, best I could do with the short notice, the best way for the future is to book in advance if possible;
Nottingham to Stoke on Trent Off Peak Return £29.60
Stoke on Trent to Manchester Pic Off Peak Return (Virgin Trains Only) £19.40
Manchester Pic to Preston Off Peak Return £27.20
Total for 2 return £76.20 a £12 saving
These are walk on fares so can be bought on the day, just make sure that the trains call into the named stations and for the Stoke to Manchester leg you must catch a Virgin train.Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0 -

I doubt if you will get it any cheaper - not for peak time travel at short notice. It's only just over £20 each per single journey and advance singles seem to be £27.50 a time.
You could try other splits - Crewe or Manchester maybe?0 -

hi everyone I was wondering if I could pick your brains please?
we're trying to look for tickets from aberystwyth to london euston (return) and so far I'm finding £123 return, but was wondering if anyone has any suggestions about where we could split it, as I have no idea whatsoever
We leave aberystwyth on 15th October (aim to be in London by 14.00)
And then return from london euston on 19th October (want to leave london after 18.00 preferably)
but other than that we're not overly fussed by times ... anyone got any ideas what I can do as we don't have any railcards?
Sorry, forgot to add that there's 2 adults travelling0 -

It seems that the advance singles haven't been released for those dates, but checking the Friday/Monday the weekend earlier you will be able to get advance singles for £10 each way per person (Total £40 return) but the times back don't equal your request and you need to be quick as those Friday tickets sell out quick.
Other options are to split at either Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton or Birmingham New St (perhaps a walk from Birmingham New St to Birmingham Moor st for a cheap Chiltern train to London Marylebone)Whoa! This image violates our terms of use and has been removed from view0 -
Thank you so much for your help ... I think I was being a bit too enthusiastic and trying to book too far in advance0
