booking a ticket from kings cross to Darlington, i tried to split it between kings cross to Peterborough, then Peterborough to Darlington.. any other suggestions...

Im looking myself at the moment. Have you tried using Hull Trains for London to Doncaster then use East Coast for Doncaster to Darlington. Ive managed to get it for roughly £16.50. Hull Trains leave from Kings Cross, same as East Coast.
  • I´ve just come across this thread and wondered if anyone can help?
We´re 2 adults and 1 child (3 years old) travelling from Leicester to Stansted Airport on 28 April. We need to catch the 0611 train but the cheapest price I can find is 40.50 per adult. Can anyone advise if I can find this any cheaper. I´ve trawled through all the websites but that´s the absolutely cheapest I´ve found.
I did wonder about a family railcard but it´s a little ambiguous. It states to be eligible for a railcard you must:
    • Travelling with at least one child
    • Children 5-15 years
    • Any 2 adults can be
      card holders
    but then it states:

You’re eligible to buy a Family & Friends Railcard if you travel with a child who is five to 15 years old. The good news is that up to 4 adults and 4 kids can travel on one Railcard – and they don’t even need to be related.
Any two adults can be named Railcard holders.
All kids under 5 travel free - and each adult may take up to two 'under fives' with them. However, if the only child in the group is under five, you'll need to purchase a discounted child ticket to qualify for the adult Railcard discount. All child fares are subject to a £1 minimum fare.

If we are eligible for the railcard we could use it on future journeys but the total cost of the family railcard and the reduced priced tickets would come to the same amount as the ticket price i´ve already found without the railcard. Obviously I don´t want ot buy the railcard only to be told that we can´t use it because the child is under 5!
    Thanks for any help guys.

If you read the first page or so of this article, you will see how 25% can be saved once again.

Quote: Simply buy the card online between Sun 7 Feb and Wed 31 Mar and enter the code promo25. Normally £26, this means you can get the card for £19.50.

I always purchased a seat for my dd using the rail card even though she was under 5 just for the fact she wasnt entitled to a seat otherwise.

I've now bought a card (and used it) and can definately confirm that you just buy a ticket for an under 5 (if they are the only child). The cost of the ticket is way less than the discount you receive overall.
  • i meant to reply to this a few days ago. i contacted the railcard providers and they confirmed that as long as you buy a ticket for the under 5 year old it.s fine. good to hear it from someone who has tried it and not had any problems.:)

I have just purchased the Family & Friends railcard online and was pricing up a couple of local journeys (got rid of the car last week) but am a bit confused about something, can anyone help clear this up please?

I have two children but one is not quite five yet. If I price up the journey for one adult and one child the cheapest fare is the Off-Peak Day Return @ £3.65 for the adult and £1.05 for the child costing a total of £4.70. If I price the same journey up for one adult and two children the cheapest fare I get offered is the Anytime Day Return @ £6.45 for the adult and £1.85 each for the children costing £8.30. Is there any reason why I can't have an Off-Peak Day Return when travelling (and paying) for both of my children? I've tried this on a couple of different journeys and it seems to be the same. I am travelling after 10am and returning before 4pm. This is with thetrainline.com.
    Thanks.

Ahh, just tried the same journey on a different site (National Rail Enquiries) and it is offering the same rates for the Off-Peak Day Return for one adult and one child and when I add the second child it is quoting Off-Peak Day Return without the railcard @ £1.00 making the total £5.70.

I am looking to travel from Poole to Swindon on Sat 27 March, return to Poole the next day. I want to travel around 10am on the Saturday and midday on the Sunday.

I can only find Super Off Peak returns at £42, singles are ok going, but make it more expensive coming back.

Can anyone help? I 've tried having a go a split ticketing in the past and got in a muddle!!
Advance Singles are available on your dates for £17.50 each way if you can be slightly flexible on the return times... i.e. leaving Swindon at 11:11 or 15:11 or later.

Info from East Coast Trains website.
