I had very bad SPD with my first - I couldn't walk without crutches for 6 months after the birth, and for 3 months I had to sleep sitting up because it was impossible for me to get into a horizontal position. (I remember the health visitor asking what contraception I was using - I told her it was a little known method called 'not being able to lie down') :)

I have one word to say.....acupunture!

Snaggles I've had SPD with my two previous pregnancies and had terrible trouble walking, dressing or doing anything I normally took for granted.

This is my third pregnancy and I felt the SPD starting around 12 weeks. My hospital referred me for acupunture around 19 weeks by which time I again was having serious problems walking and the pain has all but gone!

Please don't ask how it works (or where they stick the needles lol!) but it did work for me and it's been a real eye opener. After the first session it became quite inflamed for three days or so, but then a real improvement started. I've now been having it for ten weeks and although I sometimes still get some pain, it is so bearable.

Keep an open mind, and at least ask your hospital if they have a similar service.

That's incredible! Thanks for that, I'll look into it if I start to get the symptoms this time. I ended up with wasted muscles in my legs last time because walking (even with the crutches) was just unbearably painful. I'm so glad it has helped you because really, there's no pain like it!*

*(well, there's the whole 'giving birth' thing, obviously....) :D

I was in hospital for 2 days when I had my first. I was in a 4 bed room, and babies were not allowed out of your room. If you wanted the loo/shower/eat in dining room/use communal room etc., you had to leave baby in the cot by your bed. The other mothers all looked out for each others babies, and either they or a nurse would pick them up and cuddle them if they cried while you were away.

I just stayed on the delivery ward after having my second, and stayed in the private room, so I just had to leave him if I needed the loo/shower etc.

If you have already had babies and there are no complications and you are coping with baby ok, they only keep you for a few hours after birth!

Both wards were very secure though. They had a CCTV doorbell, and if the nurse didn't recognise your face, you were not allowed in until the person you were visiting verified who you were.
Here I go again on my own....

    Hello can I join you!

I'm Katherine and I have a daughter (7) and a son (4). I managed to concieve in the week between resignation from my old job and starting my new one so no SMP for me  therefore I'll be watching these boards like a hawk throughout my pregnancy.

I am currently 9 weeks pg and eagerly awaiting my scan as I suffered an early miscarriage this summer. I'm due on May 16th although my dates were all over the place so this is subject to change!

Unfortunately I didn't keep any of my baby stuff from before as we had originally decided to stop at two!

    Love

Congrats on your pregnancy. In the hospitals I had my two in, they had a little nursery you could wheel your baby to if you needed a shower etc. I have to admit that the first time round no-one told me about this and I was nearly in tears as I was so hungry and baby wouldn't settle. I felt to stupid to ask! Needless to say I chose a different hospital for my second baby :T

I doubt many hospitals will do bottles as breastfeeding is really the way to go, ie the midwives try to encourage you to at least try it- you're mostly only there for a day or so anyway.

These days the health care etc we receive is so good relative to the past that I think a lot of the advice we are given is unlikely to make a significant difference (e.g. how likely are we to get salmonella from raw eggs when chickens are now vaccinated?) However one reason we have less babies is because most babies do survive and are healthy. I guess we just have to decide for ourselves whether we think a particular piece of advice is worth taking. Personally I'm avoiding peanuts 100% as my husband is allergic to them and his mum ate loads of them when she was pregnant but I'm not so particular about the other things.

Advice overload- tell me about it! I got to the point where I couldn't be faffed with it all- but that put me in danger. I had vaguely recalled something about looking out for itchy hands and feet but amongst all the advice about don't do the gardening if there are any cats within 3 miles of your home etc etc I ignored it. Turned out I had developed a liver condition brought on by pregnancy which can result in stillbirth- they whipped me down the hospital immediately and induced labour early. Thank goodness it all worked out well in the end. My point is, it's hard to differentiate the absolute dos and do nots from the slight risks and warnings.

Course you can! Cope and past the last EDD list, and add yourself on!

Check your dates as you might just scrape in for SMP:

To get SMP you must have been:
    • Employed by your employer into the qualifying week which is the 15th week before the week your baby is due.
    • Employed by the same employer without a break for at least 26 weeks into the 15th week before the week your baby is due. Part weeks count as full weeks.
    • Earning before tax an average of £84.00 a week. This is called the Lower Earnings Limit for National Insurance Contributions (NI) and is the amount you have to earn to qualify for benefits. You have to earn more than this amount before you actually start paying NI.

if not, you should be able to claim Maternity Allowance instead:

    Hi everyone!

I've decided that now I'm in my 2nd Semister (Just)
I will start to buy things for the baby. Bit by bit so it doesn't
    hit me so hard financially.

Has anyone has anyone had any experience with the Quinny Zapp + maxi cosi car seat or Quinny Buzz + maxi cosi car seat ? If so what where they and which would you recommend.

I was going to go for the zapp as it's so lightweight but people say it may topple over and is not suitable from birth. But alot of website say it is.
Also I read someone had the buzz and whenever they went to put it in the car they accidently hit the button that made it open up again.

    Help!!!

Thanks for that. I have already checked and I wont qualify for SMA. It works out I think, as a rule, as long as you have had one period while in your new job you'll hit that golden 26 weeks employment at 15 weeks before. I'll still get MA thank goodness....I'm hoping that Tax Credits will top me up a bit too or we'll struggle (I earn the most in my household).

    Added myself now too!
