you don't need to take your own bottles and formula to hospital. they will provide them for you in premade glass bottles, as you wouldn't be able to sterilise your own bottles while staying there.

Not my lovely hospital  - have already checked this out with my midwife and all they provide are sterilising facilities! Great ain't it.

As for breastfeeding, if only it was that straightforward with my last experience. When I was trying to do it with dd, I lost count of how many midwives and "experts" watched us while we were in hospital - all said she was latching on fine bla bla, none could explain why I was in agony. Toe curlingly painful is all I can say - every time I fed her I was in tears, it was that excruciating - they would bleed and not have time to recover between feeds. Not that great for bonding when you are dreading your newborn waking up and wanting feeding.
  • yes some hospitals will not provide any formula or bottles, it is best to check with the hospital first. if the hospital is trying to increase breastfeeding rates in the area they are unlikely to provide forula and bottles, in our hospital it was locked away so mothers could not help themselves!! this sort of thing has changed a lot in last few years. Mayday croydon is my hospital, where i gave birth on 15th august to baby 12 days overdue.

When I had my first 2 (9 and 7 years ago) the hospital did provide bottles of formula for those who didn't want to breastfeed. However they didn't provide anything else.

You had to take in all your own nappies, wipes or cotton wool for bum cleaning, changing mats, and clothes for baby if you didn't want them to wear a hospital gown. They didn't supply any disposables like sanitary pads or breast pads for Mam's either.

With my first I didn't know the blood loss after would be so heavy, so I just took normal period towels in. These couldn't cope with the flow, and I had a right battle to get a couple of thick maternity pads, until my Mam arrived with a pack for me.

Check with your hospital to see what is available - you don't want to get caught short!
Here I go again on my own....
  • I can't believe how much the NHS varies from place to place. So they save a few quid on baby essentials, and in my opinion risk the babys health (as if you want to be sterilising all your stuff in hospital)

What is the world coming to?

I thought i was going to have to test my hospital out last night. I was up for two hours with stomach and back ache. I didn't wake DH up luckily, as i couldn't distinguish any pattern in it, and boy am i shattered today.

I think you guys have just convinced me to put the travel changing mat in my hospital bag as i don't know whether they are provided, but worst case scenario i'll use a towel. I put a few in for the baby.

Thanks for filling me in. I naively assumed all hospitals are the same, but obviously not. If i end up wanting a bottle for my baby, i will kick up a stink until i am given one. ;) They will be glad to get shut if me.

purplepatch - have you been advised to rub your nipples with a flannel every time you have a bath/shower to toughen them ready? I was told to do this from 35 weeks onwards, not too rough. (not before then as too much nipple stimulation can set you off in labour) Just wondered if that might help.

No I haven't, will get scrubbing!! lol - thanks for that though.

I had a similar type experience last night as my dd for the 3rd night on the trot kept waking up. Eventually after crying out several times, she decided to throw up all over her duvet and then was sick again about half a dozen times every half hour. Meanwhile I was getting all manner of braxton hicks contractions which were really painful. I was starting to get slightly flustered I have to say!!

Needless to say that my pains didn't develop into anything, I'm absolutely shattered now, she's still throwing up, I'm meant to be seeing the midwife this afternoon, all a bit of a disaster really. Heyho.

Anyone else needing to take a backpack into hospital with them? The list of stuff is mad. My bag is only half packed really, I guess I should sort my life out just in case.
  • Just updating my due date since scan yesterday. I think it's ridiculous some of the stuff that hospitals won't provide. I was shocked when my friend said she would have to take nappies in with her but at least that is something you're defintitely going to need anyway. Surely they can't just leave the baby to starve if you're in hospital and for some reason breastfeeding is not working? I guess I'd better find out what our hospital provides.

Hello! Please can I join in? I'm 9 weeks pregnant with my second (have a 6 yr old boy already). At the moment I'm feeling sick 90% of the time, can't bear the smell of ANYTHING lol! My baby is due on 12th of May. I can hardly remember anything about my first pregnancy (think I've blotted it out...) so I feel almost like it's my first pregnancy all over again!

I had very bad SPD with my first - I couldn't walk without crutches for 6 months after the birth, and for 3 months I had to sleep sitting up because it was impossible for me to get into a horizontal position. (I remember the health visitor asking what contraception I was using - I told her it was a little known method called 'not being able to lie down') :)

Anyway, I'm really glad there's somewhere like this I can come when I feel scared or overwhelmed, to ask silly questions or to read other peoples funny stories. It has really cheered me up over the last few weeks even though looking at the computer screen makes me feel sick (but hey, what doesn't!!!).

    You have my sypathies snaggles.

I'm 7 weeks pregnant and throwing up a lot. I've gone off coffee, chocolate, bread and other foods that I used to like. I've gone off most drinks, even water and I normally drink gallons of that. Most of the time I'm drinking peppermint tea to ease the sicky feelings and summer fruits squash as that is the only drink I like right now! The only foods I really want are crunchy nut cornflakes and mini cheddars. I never really ate them before getting pregnant, so don't know why I want them now.

My youngest is 7, so I can't remember being like this either!

Don't forget to copy and paste the last post of the due date list, and add yourself onto it.
Here I go again on my own....

Sorry you're not feeling so good either - it's horrible isn't it. I've been off work for 2 weeks - I just can't get there because I was having to stop the car every mile or so to throw up in the gutter. I can't drink anything apart from water although I can manage to eat ice lollies, which help a bit. Oh well, only 31 weeks to go!!
