Ooh, this club is a marvelous idea! I'm neither pregnant (that I know of???) nor actively trying yet......does being seriously broody count?;)

I've bookmarked this thread, the 'Having a baby OS style'....I keep getting emails from Raising Kids....so I must have joined that at some point?

Hi I'm Lu, 27 and 23 weeks pregnant. Enjoyed reading the tips I've been able to - there's so many!

Just wanted to give a couple of tips of my own. If you live in the Yorkshire area and want to buy some Mamas & Papas stuff they've opened an outlet store in Cooper bridge, Huddersfield. It's not massive, but well worth a trip. They have furniture, prams, car seats, clothes (inc maternity clothes), bedding and all sorts of accessories.

The furniture tends to be ex-display, so has some damage, but it's definitely cheaper than full price if you're happy to settle for nearly perfect.

Also, get google-ing as I've found the M&P Murano 3pc nursery set (£499 in argos) for £395 on a site called Babyboomdirect.co.uk, however, there is no mattress and a £20 delivery charge, so it may not be that much cheaper after all!

  • I'm coming to the end of my pregnancy (36 weeks and counting) but have just had a scan through the posts and loved this thread.

I've just been reading Baileys post - I'm a personnel manager (although my brain seems to have been mushed by pregnancy - so its a good job I'm on maternity leave) I've only scan read the posts so I may have missed a bit but have you had a risk assessment? You are entitled to one and this may help you to discuss difficulties with odd shift patterns. My other tip about taking unpaid leave is that it may have an impact on your maternity pay. I think it's normal for the first bit of maternity pay to be based on what you earned during the 15th week before confinement (but don't quote me on that). So you employers offer of a days holiday each week might be quite useful to boast your earnings.

My first born is three and I'm currently feeling like I've forgotten everything about newborns but I'm hoping it will all come flooding back. Two tips I do remember that were excellent last time - do not buy disposable pants! Lots of lists for things to take to hospital suggest these but believe me they are useless. I remember buying these at week 35 to put in my bag and when I still hadn't given birth at week 41 a friend advised me to check they fit (cheeky cow thought I was huge). I could barely get them over my swollen knees. The solution - a multi pack of asdas cheapest cotton finest in two sizes larger. Much cheaper than the disposables.

I know there has been lots of talk about nipple creams but I can't really comment as I never used any. However for anyone struggling to get a baby latched on or suffering with cracked nipples I would definately recommend the little plastic shields you can buy. I really struggled to breastfeed to the point I had nearly given up. My midwife suggested them and it enabled me to breast feed for 9 months. I have already stocked up - £3.15 in mothercare - much much cheaper than formula.

  • This thread has grown so much since I was last here a couple of weeks ago, but I just wanted to add my name to the list of babies who have now arrived.

Thriftybaby made her appearance after 24 hours of labour and an emergnecy C-section. Then we struggled for days with breastfeeding but had to give up as I just wasn't producing enough milk and she was dehydrated and starving. Then I cried for days feeling that I was a bad mother - I had stupidly gone into the whole thing having read all those 'trust your body' books, thinking I could manage with deep breathing and that if I was determined and relaxed enough that I could deliver without complications. Complete crap. I was as determined as they come, but if I had just 'trusted my body', baby and I would now be in a plot in the local graveyard. And having survived the birth, if I had continued to try to breastfeed she would now be so ill that she would probably be back in hospital. On one level I feel I've failed her, and on the other I'm just so glad that she is here and healthy. Its not how I wanted it to be, but its how it is, and I'm not going to torture myself about it.

Good luck to everyone else, and if things don't go as smoothly as you hoped, remember that despite your best intentions, sometimes birth just doesn't go smoothly, and there is no point blaming yourself.

How can you even go there?!

You've given birth to a happy and healthy little girl and are doing your very best for her.

    Congratulations! :T:T:T:T:T

The milk thing could be due to the CS as well. After mine, I had literally no milk until about six days or so (no one told me that in the hospital at the time though  ). Nothing ever seems to go to plan when it comes to parenting. You sound like you've got your head well screwed on though, good luck!!!

I had a CS and I don't feel the least bit guilty - you brought a child into the world and that is a miracle, please don't feel guilty. And I know we shouldn't tell others how to feel but I can't stop myself sorry - I really think all Mums should be encouraged to feel pride no matter how the child got here, got out or got fed :O) It's a job well done. And I justified it to myself by thinking I have no idea how I got here and can't remember if I was pushed or dragged and I'm ok (well almost ok LOL).

Oh - and no one told me after 8 months of eating for 2 they would stop me eating when I got to Hospital - didn't eat from Saturday morning to Monday morning. And on Sunday they brought my lunch in the room and left it there calling to me. My dear dear DH sat and ate it for me...I could have killed him there and then..

Well said!!! A C/S isn't an easy option, well, it may be if your in the Portland having your champers and lobster afterwards, but for those of us in the 'real' world it isn't!

Which reminds me of another 'nasty' the boil I developed on my CS scar afterwards! Not nice, it caused a very nasty hole, and the HV's advice was to get DH with a sterilised needle to release it. He actually enjoyed that - he see's himself as the 'spot doc'!!! It was agony, worse than the op!
