So, being a TTC, I am currently waiting to see if we were successful this cycle. Another week or so to go... however I have managed to get myself an ear infection. Which I am treating with antibiotics and lots of paracetamol and ibuprofen. This helps me stop crying and get out of bed. This morning my hubby sent me an email about NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen, taken at time of conception stupidly increase risk of miscarriage. When I get pregnant and know about it, I may be careful with what I put into my body - wouldn't want to hurt anyone. BUT in this pre-pregnancy, waiting-game time of my life I am not yet accustomed to thinking about hypothetical babies needs. And the pain of an ear infection is rather strong. Should I stop taking the medication? Is there any point suffering this much? Can't be good for the baby either. I woke up in pain four times last night. (With no support from the snoring lump on the other side of the bed, I might add. )

paracetamol is ok but I can't take ibuprophen so haven't checked. I'd suggest checking with the doctor or phoning NHS Direct (08454647).

Ibuprophen is a definate no when pregnant....along with lots of other things. Essentially I've been sticking to the rule that everything other than paracetamol is banned. This is simply for bean's sake. If anything did come up I'd contact my doctor / midwife and ask them.

I have decided to only take the paracetamol from now on. Unless my sleep is disturbed again... no point calling doctor, as I have nothing to tell him really. Except if my ear is not better by tomorrow I will be needing some better drops.

SusanCarter are you abstaining from medicines already? All I have managed is to get hubby to carry the shopping in 'just in case' I'm not allowed to lift heavy items :D

daisykate124 sorry about your disappointment this month, enjoy your monthly - it may always be your last one for ages... I was looking at Always at the pharmacy and it made me wonder if I will need them for long... *sigh*

Not exactly. The only thing I take regularly is hayfever stuff so have cut down to lowest dose I can tolerate and will consult doctor if/when I get pregnant (hopefully over winter so I can cope without it). Everything else I'm trying to follow the rules for if you are pregnant (no salmon pate  ) so when I couldn't sleep with wisdom tooth pain my husband found the info about parcetamol on the NHS direct website.
EDIT Am also taking a folic acid multivitamin thing.

And I have no idea what the rules are... I have that 'what to expect etc' book, but it's quite a read.
Though I am taking the folic acid...

How much easier would it be just to find out when you're 2-3 months gone? Or in fact be one of those who get a tummy ache and give birth shortly after!

:rotfl: It is a bit of a waiting game isn't it. Probably useful to know in advance though so that you can get great moneysaving deals on all the stuff you need.

I wish I hadn't found out as early as I did - on the one hand it was necessary as I was still smoking then (I quit as soon as I found out) but I'm getting SO IMPATIENT!!!

I'm only 8 weeks so still no bump, sickness has pretty much disappeared so I'm just the grumpy one who keeps peeing and falling asleep. Not very fun! I was never very good at waiting...

Susan i may be able to help you with this one....... I use a homoeopathic hayfever remedy which you can get from boots or health food shops its called New Era for hayfever and allergic rhinitis (white tub with white and blue label) you get 450 tiny little tissue salts which you place on your tounge and they melt (tastes ok) and they cost about £4 you can take them as often as you like so if its a partically bad day your not waiting to take your next dose you can take these straight away. I have reccomended these to all my hayfever suffering friends and they work for most so it may be worth trying.

Also being pregnant there is no risk as these are a homoeopatic remedy, they are also cheaper than most hayfever drugs and they work ( for me anyway!):j

Just wanted to say, it is possible to take certain types of prescribed antibiotics when pregnant. Not sure which as i haven't needed any. Also, for those of you TTC, one of the things the midwife asked me is what medications you have taken recently. I had been taking two different antibiotics last november, and then pregnant round about valentines day, which she wrote in my pregnancy notes.

Also, for the hayfever, this year i have been taking bee pollen tablets from a company called medibee. These are safe to use in pregnancy, and i have found that my symptoms have been very mild this year. I don't know if that is because they work better than the antihistamine i normally need, or if being pregnant has altered my immune system, but either way i will try them again next year.

hope that is useful to someone.

Also, folic acid, the recommended dose is take it for at least 3 months before pregnancy, so all of you TTC should be having it now.

Good luck everyone, and hope the pain goes soon agutka
