    Hi all,
My son was born on Sunday and we had a brief but amazing birth, which I really wanted to share with you all:
My waters broke on Saturday 2.30pm - first a trickle, then the gushing just wouldn't stop. Had a check-up at the hospital when I had my first contractions around 6pm after a "sweep", then went home as the cervix had only just started to dilate.

Contractions built up so quickly at home - "8-7-6-5-4-3 mins apart" that we were back at the hospital 3 hours later (now on TENS machine). The delivery ward staff tried to sent us home without even checking me again (The midwife flippantly said "the contractions are still irregular - you've still got 10 or more hours to go yet" while I was doubled up in pain in the corridor!), but we were originally booked into the Birth Centre so we thought we'd check with them.

The Birth Centre checked us in immediately, and after 5 or so more contractions, I was asking for more pain relief. I agreed to an examination by the midwife - thinking I'd only be 1 or 2 cms dilated - but she told me I was fully dilated and already in transition. My husband quickly helped me rip my clothes, TENS pads, etc. off to jump into the birthing pool, and after several hours of excruciating pain, baby was born on Sunday 1.50am. We were so proud to see a calm and alert baby boy appear out of the water, who latched on almost immediately and hardly made a sound. I had no cuts or tears - just small grazes and bruises - and the only pain relief I had was water, TENS and 2 paracetamols after dinner! We left the hospital 15 hours after the birth, and baby's been an angel.

The main points I wanted to share with you are that:
    - the seemingly idealised intervention- and drug-free labour is possible!
    - I had a normal pregnancy and baby was in a good position, so I was a good candidate for using the Birth Centre; I also did perineal exercises twice a week from week 36
    - active birthing techniques (relaxation, breathing techniques, being upright and mobile, etc), the relaxing environment (dimmed lights, quiet music) and expertise and reassurance of the midwife at the BC got me through the contractions...and my husband's solid support of course! :T
    - follow your instincts and what your body tells you - I'm not normally in tune with my body, but on the day it really helped us make the right decisions e.g. not going home when told to by the delivery ward
    - be confident in yourselves, girls - you can do it, whichever way it has to happen.

Best of luck to all of you, and hope you all have lovely healthy smiley babies too :j
