Hi I am pregnant with my first child (7 weeks) :rotfl: and I am worried about the expenses that I may incur if Iam not thrifty with my money. Can someone help me to draw up a list of what I may need in the first few months after giving birth? I have opened up a new savings account with ice (thanks Martin). I have also opened a national savings ISA and I am desperately trying to budget for a baby. What will I need for the hospital? Please HELP!!!!!

congrats alright

there are loads of tips about money saving with babies on the site and it's one of those questions like how long is a piece of string... if you are able to breast feed that will save you lots of money, if you use washable nappies that will also save you money etc etc...

To be honest, it's more a case of working out what you don't need than what you do as there are so many lists around of what you supposedly need. According to mothercare you need a "baby box" for bathing your baby. I was puzzled for ages but eventually discovered that it is not a box for the baby but they just mean a container to put all the things for bathing the baby in and therefore any old box would do rather than a special one.

I think there's a few threads on Old Style about babies and what is needed. They're worth reading as there are lots of tips on how to get away with needing less or cheap alternatives to things. Using them I managed to draw up a list of what I expect to need for the first year which I used to produce a rough costing. So far, the only thing which has been over budget was that I never planned for maternity wear. My friend has lent me some stuff and I bought a couple of skirts on eBay but it's the underwear that has cost me.

I found the BBC site really good - https://www.bbc.co.uk/parenting/ as neither of us had a clue and our Doctor was like "I will get an appt for you in about 5-6weeks through the post - now off you pop" lol

Hennypenny - 19th December Girl No 2, child no3 - Kira, born 19-12-06, 8lb 15.5oz, 9 days early. Middle name giving us a bit of a problem, but sure it will come to us eventually - really like Holly, but surname is Woods so would be a bit unfair!

Middleman it really is up to you when you tell people - usually people wait until after 12 weeks before telling all and sundry because of the possibility of miscarriage. If your OH is working she may not want to tell work for a while yet. But for family and close friends it's really up to you. We told our best mates the day we found out as we needed someone to talk to and we were seeing them anyway and not telling them would have been really hard. We then told family at about 6 weeks as it was Christmas and it was obvious that I wasn't drinking and there was something different (I don't usually have to go to bed every afternoon ). We then told a couple of other people at about 8 weeks and a few more after the first scan which was 11 weeks but it's only now that I'm 15 weeks that we're happy to tell everyone. There are no hard and fast rules. I tend to work on the premise of 'if we lost the baby who would we want to support us' and tell those people.

You'll find that not much happens at all at the start as long as there's no bleeding or worries so you can feel a bit adrift but that's where places like this come in handy :cool:

We told our parents straight away but told everyone else after 12 weeks.

I couldn't take have to explain to everyone if something went wrong.

I was debating whether to keep it secret for a few weeks, but hubby was on the phone to his family seconds after the line appeared on the test stick, and my children announced it to their classes at school the following day
