Hi all, I'm hoping to join your club soon and am wondering if any of you can give me a rough idea how much 'joining the club' (!) will cost us i.e. maternity clothes, equipment and stuff until baby is about 1. Also, any tips on money saving while spending all of this money would be gratefully recieved!

Welcome Jo_Jo!

I'm still pregnant so can't comment on how much a baby costs in the first year but in terms of the things you need before they are born you can do it all really cheap or spend an absolute fortune.

For maternity clothes I've stuck to e-bay and have got a complete wardrobe for about £60, I've also been given some clothes from friends. Following advice from the lovely people on this site I've tried only to buy the things you really need for a new baby and actually its suprisingly little. I've also again bought virtually nothing new and have had some amazing bargins from e-bay and in the sales - excellent quality too. Friends are always looking to pass things on and freecycle is a great place too.

Overall I reckon I've got virtually everything I need for about £1000 - and it would have been a lot less if I hadn't insisted on buying more expensive nursery furniture than was actually needed. I should also confess that my parents gave us a bit of money towards the pushchair too as this was our most expensive item.

If you search this forum you should find some old posts where people (like me!) have asked questions about what they really need for a new baby.

Chuck an odd item in your trolley when you do your supermarket shopping - a tub of sudocrem, couple of packets of wipes on BOGOF, packet of vests, a bottle - that kind of thing.

It soon mounts up and you don't really notice the cost compared to going and buying all the little bits and bobs in one go.

If anyone's looking at car seats, here's some information from the AA who tested loads of car seats.

We bought our yesterday (on sale in Toys R Us) but after we got home we found it was missing the instruction booklet. We phoned them up and they agreed to post it which saves us driving all the way back up but I'd recommend checking everything is in the box before you drive away just to save the hassle. Also, don't know whether all shops are like this but Toys R Us told us they wouldn't sell a car seat without checking it in your car first and they will only check it in daylight hours.

My Baby's Journal only £4.99 (over £14 from Amazon!). I've seen this memory book in the shops and it is a lovely one.

There is also still a free P+P code over on the Codes board HERE.

There's also this Pregnancy Bible from WHSmiths for £6.90. (RRP is over £20 - it's a massive hardback book).

You can get books delivered to any local smiths store free of charge and 7% cashback through Quidco.

Asda doing deals on baby toiletties there range is reduced from £1.98 to £1.00 and some johnson stuff is 1/2 price baby lotion, baby wipes, baby bath, softwash creamy bath, softwash handwash.

My local store also had baby gift set (mittens, socks, bodysuit,sleepsuit, bib & hat) reduced from £7.00-£3.50
