I'm 21 weeks pregnant and i still haven't stopped physically (sp?) being sick. The smell or look of most things makes me sick. I'm not due to see the midwife/doctor till im 25 weeks. Is this normal? Although i'm not being sick everyday any more it is still beeing sick at least twice a week.

You don't get seen as much these days unless there are complications.

With the community midwife I was seen at 9 weeks (should have been 8 but she was busy!) for a booking in visit, then at 19 weeks yesterday (should have been 18 but it was Christmas last week!). I'm booked in again at 24 weeks, then 28 weeks, and will take it from there after that. Midwife said she normally likes to see people at 32 weeks, then 34 weeks, 36 weeks, then weekly till birth. Each person is different though, and two emergency slots are kept back in each clinic so I can see her in between times if I need to.

I also got an appointment at 14 weeks at the hospital, as I had a stomach operation a few years back, so I need consultant permission for a home birth. However, in normal cirumstances, I wouldn't have got that appointment and been under midwife only care all the way through.

Sickness can be bad in some people. If Gingham Ribbon is reading, she could post a whole novel on sickness! When you do eat and keep food down, all the nutrients go to baby first and you get the left overs. So even though you might look and feel awful, baby is probably thriving!

Is there anything else you are scared about? Post your worries here, and I'm sure we can put your mind at rest.
Here I go again on my own....
  • We were given a photo from my early scan. I didn't know till later that you are supposed to have a full bladder and I'm sure I can't have had anything in mine as I'd just been admitted to hospital because of sickness and was very dehydrated but they still managed to get a good view. However a friend of mine who's just had her third told me that her uterus is tilted the opposite way to normal which means it's harder for them to see if she has a full bladder and she gets asked to "half" empty her bladder.

tequilla_slammer2002: I was still being sick roughly 2 or 3 times a week up to 20 weeks. As long as you are able to keep food/drink down most of the time then they don't seem to be too concerned. The midwife told me at 18 weeks that if they found ketones in my urine they would give me some medication (had 3 different types which didn't work prior to hospital admission at 7 weeks). If you are only being sick a couple of times a week, that is unlikely to happen as you get ketones when you are able to eat so little that your bady starts using up your fat stores. From what I can tell most people aren't physically sick anywhere near as much but it's common enought that everyone seems to know someone who's been that bad.

Question for people who've already given birth before: One of the booklets the midwife gave me said that if you massage olive oil into your perineum for a few weeks before giving birth then it reduces the risk of tearing/episiotomy. Has anybody tried it and does it work?
  • Thanks Becles and Susan. That helps loads. Is it normal to be tired all the time no matter how much sleep you get? Everybody says that you are ment to have loads of energy ect in your 2nd trimester but all i seem to do is sleep! We saw 'peanut' on the 29th dec and they said everything is fine. They said baby must have just eaten, dispite the fact i had just been sick so i'm guessing that that must have been a good sign!?

Is it normal to be tired all the time no matter how much sleep you get? Everybody says that you are ment to have loads of energy ect in your 2nd trimester but all i seem to do is sleep!

Yes it's perfectly normal to be tired all the time - I am! Most nights I'm up a couple of times for a wee too, so I rarely get a full nights undisturbed sleep. Guess it's all practise for when baby arrives!

Are you working? I work from home, and I find a decent rest mid-afternoon helps. I don't sleep, but just put my feet up on the sofa and read or watch junk TV for an hour. It charges my batteries up before my other two come in from school at 3.30! It'll be harder to rest though if you are still in a full time job.

I wasn't working when I was pregnant with my first baby, and I had bags of energy. With the second I was working part time, and looking after a toddler at home, so I was tired all the way through. I guess it just depends on what else you have going on in your life.
Here I go again on my own....
  • No I'm not working but i still dont have bags of energy. Thank you so much for putting my mind a ease.

Can You please also explain to me what it means when baby is back to back whilst in labour. i have read the book my midwife gave me and i have asked some other people i know who have had kids but they all look at me as if im an alien.

I have read through the Pregnancys best kept seacrets thread and that answered lots of questions that i had but the thing that scares me ore than anything is the giving birth part, there are so many things that can go wrong or is that just me thinking to much?

thanks for all your help and sorry for asking so many questions

Can You please also explain to me what it means when baby is back to back whilst in labour.

Normally the back of the baby's head is cradled in your pelvis, and the spine runs up the outside edge of your bump, with baby's bottom just below your ribs.

If baby is back to back, they are the opposite way round, so baby's head can press on the bottom of your spine, and baby's spine follows the curve of your spine. My eldest was like that right up until a week before he was born, when he turned the right way round!

It's not a huge problem, but it can make labour a little more uncomfortable and you can suffer from problems like sciatica which is pains in your hips and thighs caused by baby's head pressing on the base of your spine.

that i had but the thing that scares me ore than anything is the giving birth part, there are so many things that can go wrong or is that just me thinking to much?

That is normal too! I'm having my third and I still have odd scared "what if" moments :o Do keep reading up, so you are prepared if something does go wrong, and you understand what is happening. I think it keeps your calmer in labour if you know what is happening to your body, and you are better equipped to deal with it. Chances are though everything will go fine, and as soon as baby arrives, you'll wonder what on earth you were so worried about!

Are you having the baby in hospital? If it puts your mind at rest, your midwife will be able to arrange visits to the delivery suite and labour wards. If you see it with your own eyes and imagine yourself being there, you might feel more comfortable about it?

    Morning!

Thanks for the ginger biscuit tip Lu T will be sending DH out to buy some ASAP ;)

Emma I take feeling sick as a very good sign. This is my third pregnancy. I was sick with my first (DS aged 3) but felt great throughout my second and never really felt 'confident' that everything was ok. Had a 12 week scan and everything was fine (my mum was with me and said I looked so relieved) then lost the baby two weeks later - somehow I just knew something wasn't right. It was a dreadful experience but I have accepted that nature did it for a reason and am extremely grateful for DS and to be pregnant again - even if I do feel very crap . Like you I'm really scared and probably won't relax until I get passed 14 weeks but there are some wonderfully supportive people here and some really good advice. I wish you all the best.

It's all very exciting to share in your pregnancies - I feel quite privileged - especially (MSE) Andrea ! Congrats to you all.
    Punky x
