  • Hey I'm new here and I have a few questions I'm desperate for answers to. I've been comping since November 2009 and so far I've only won a t-shirt and a book. I've entered around 2000 competitions and I know it is mainly all down to luck. However I have a hotmail.co.uk e-mail address. Most people seem to think this should NOT effect wins etc. what is your opinion? also here is an example of the e-mail address insertwordhere.insertwordhere@hotmail.co.uk as you can see there is a dot in the middle of the address. Does it look fake to you?

I also live in Northern Ireland but if a competition says UK it would include Northern Ireland unless it says mainland UK right?

one final question :) If I enter a newletter to be entered into a competition and then 3 months later they have a new competition via newsletter and I enter by applying for newsletter AGAIN, does it count as two enteries and get me disqualified?

I'm trying to work out why I have so little wins you see. Some people here get 5 or more wins a month and I don't see how someone can continue to get so many when I have so little. Is it all just luck?

    Thanks in advance
Wins in 2011 so far - 1 watch, £56 worth of Blue Nose Friends stuff, BullGuard Internet Security, Fifi & Roary goodie bags and DS game, 2 dvds, A-team football, 2 books :o

little anne i have won comps for me or on behalf of others occasionally using all email domains including hotmail. i have found a few comps that exclude ni in their terms, and others (purchase comps mostly) that are npn for ni only (i use my mums addy for them if its not something i buy lol).

ive won quite abit, but im probably entering 2-3000 comps a month most months, this month has been slower, but ive entered a lot less (getting through 10 or so pages of main comps on here a day rather than all ending the next day)...

so i would say it does come down to luck, but the more you enter the more likley you are to get a win from at least one of them iyswim.

I worked out that I had entered at least 700 comps in the last week, I enter by date and am trying to get ahead because there are hundreds ending on the 31st. It really is all down to luck, you can enter a mascara giveaway where there are 5,000 to be given away and get nothing, then another where there is just one prize and win it. Just keep going, if it starts getting a chore step away for a while and come back when you're in a better frame of mind. Absolutely nothing that you can do will make you any more likely to get a win.

  • ok wow you all enter far more than me ^^ and I thought I was entering lots. I guess I just felt left out amongst all those who had won lots. I ought to be happy with my book and t-shirt. Plus I do tend to enter into competitions on very high traffic sites. I don't mind the lack of wins as long as I know I'm not wasting my time by having a disqualifying e-mail address. anyways thanks for the replys

  • I enter dozens of competitions a day but seldom win anything. Re the ITV entries. Do on line 5 times free entries stand the same chance as a phone in which is expensive? How so?
Are the comps where you register and then get bombarded with junk mail a con or does anyone actually win them.

I don't think that this is the right place for your post but perhaps a friendly mod could move it? (these general types of questions seem to be put into the I Won & Game Over subforums, see top of page). There are already many threads of this type to read through, have a look through the subforums above - particularly the I Won, I Won forum which will show you that many, many MSErs do win competitions.

I have been making the effort to enter competitions in significant numbers (for me, that is, I'm sure it's nothing the serious numbers other people manage) for about 3 months - I have entered about 1,200 competitions and I have won a pair of cinema tickets so far. :p There is no hard and fast rule but I guess it's a matter of increasing your odds by entering as many as possible, over a significant period of time.

I'm sure that under law, online entries stand exactly the same chance as phone entries, if they are operating the comps as they should do they are not allowed to discriminate.

In terms of spam, personally I only enter those comps where I can choose to opt out of receiving marketing. If it's signing up to email newsletter only, where I can opt out later, that's OK (for me). In cases where they state within the Ts & Cs that they are allowed to market you and pass on your details, and you have to write by snail mail to opt out, I don't enter those.

I'm sure others with more experience will be along to add more, but like I said there is a thread like this posted every few days so you may be as well to go and have a look through previous ones, where there is already lots of info. :)

PS The sticky threads at the beginning of this forum are also worth reading for the kind of thing you're looking for....

Best to set up a throwaway addy for entering comps.

There's a huge difference between mailings from Companies and SPAM. Personally I don't object to getting the odd email from reputable companies, I think if they are offering competitions and prizes, the least that I can do is let them show me their wares, you can get some good offers amongst them. Also, don't forget that if everyone said 'No' to the emails, we wouldn't hear about half of the competitions that were available to enter. There is a list of Companies that are liable to flood you with SPAM and the more experienced compers on here are very quick to alert posters if they happen to inadvertantly post a comp from one of them.

I've been comping for almost a year, and havent won a thing. I think it's purely a case of luck, just keep trying and enter as many as you can! I wondered that about hotmail, the hotmail addy I was using could have been seen as a spam one so I switched to a Gmail account that actually has my name in, don't know if it makes any difference (probably doesn't :p)
