Still, the commercial world relies on this sort of nonsense behaviour.

    +1

    Good old 'badge buying'.
And that my son, is how to waft a towel!
  • On boxing day 2012 our Landrover Freelander was nearly empty and we filled from a TESCO filling station with Diesel (receipt proof) and a few days later, after only covering a few miles, the car wouldn't start. The garage told us thier was petrol in the tank!!!

After complaining to TESCO they told us it's not possible for them to get Petrol in thier Diesel tanks and no one else had complained so go away!

We've filled out vehicle damage claim with TESCO, got it rejected, gone to the papers and trading standards, quoting 'Sale of Goods Act 1979' and now we are preparing to go to the small claims court for recovery of costs.

Did you ever get this sorted? Any adivce?

I know this is a really old post but may be relevant to someone.

Is it possible that pump was replaced on the wrong holster? I've seen it before where it was a scam - the super and standard unleaded switched round so the customer fills with super but pays for standard but in theory the same could happen for diesel.

The pump thinks diesel has been dispensed and shows on the receipt but the nozzle was actually unleaded. Of course it would mean you've picked up and used a GREEN not Black pump but you picked it from the correct location. Pumps only seem to detect which holster the nozzle has been lifted from - not what is actually being dispensed.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Near me, busy place that. Filled up this morning, thankfully not there.
I use Tesco, purely for pay at pump convenience at 3am.
Have heard people say their cars go much better on diesel from Esso, guess diesel can have differing cetane ratings, but don't know much about it.

My old boss' car used to get a warning light on if he bought fuel from tesco/asda etc but then it would go fine if he bought it from a "normal" petrol station.

I fill mine up at sainsbos all the time and never have any issue although it is petrol I get.

Interesting read though as I am getting a diesel next month.

That sounds rather like a one off issue, I've seen similar for most chains including those branded as Esso etc from time to time.
All it takes is a dozy member of staff or a poorly labelled filling point, or an old storage tank that may be letting moisture in etc...

From memory Tesco/Morrisons etc are likely to be slightly better maintained on average as they're all owned by the parent company, whilst many of the "branded" stations are franchises where the owner has paid for the rights to use the name and as part of that has to use their fuel so maintenance etc of the tanks can be much more variable at the branded stations.

All fuels sold in the UK have to meet a set standard (often at least, if not better than an international standard), and vehicles tend to be designed to run to those standards (otherwise your UK bought car may not run in France, or Poland).

If a car engine cannot cope with the standard fuel from any UK outlet the manufacturer has some questions to answer - UK fuel tends to be higher quality than much of the rest of the world (IIRC our standard unleaded for example would be classed as "high octane" and thus a premium in some countries).

UK fuel is a steaming pile of excrement..... Even more so with bio-ethanol now in the damn stuff. Meaning it literally goes off in your fuel tank if you don't use it up within around 30 days, known as phase separation. Turning to a layer of (approx) 80 octane fuel, with a thin layer of water/ethanol at the bottom of the tank. And because ethanol has a high octane but low calorific value, you also get less bang for your proverbial buck on top of the damage that ethanol does to your fuel system.

Fuel in Japan is 100 octane.

The common problem with diesel on the other hand, is when fuel stations don't purge the summer diesel out in time for the cold weather, which causes blocked up fuel filters and fuel lines as soon as a frost hits.

I've used Tesco diesel on and off over the last 25,000 miles in my Golf diesel, cover 500 miles a week.

I've been getting up to 70mpg on it brim to brim, however i noticed that occassionally the car would "cut out".

Happened several times. Left the car in, and they did some analysis on the car. Turned out to be a fault on a connector the wiring loom.

!!!! all to do with Tesco fuel or otherwise.
