Did some research on beer and other stuff and can confirm this about ALDI brands:

Steinhauser Lager is brewed by Binding, Frankfurt.
St Etienne Belgian Lager is made by Stella Artois, Leuven/Louvain.
Klassiek Dutch Lager is brewed by the Bavaria brewery, the Netherlands.
Wernesgrüner Pilsener is an established premium brand from East Germany.
Galahad Lager is from the Netherlands, but I can't find the brewery.
Brasserie French Lager is from the brewery St Omer, France.

Haribo is an established brand by Hans Riegel, Bonn.
Toffifee, and "merci" chocolate are established brands by Storck, Berlin.
The creme compose is by Strothmann, another established maker of dairy products.

I'll chase up Finnbar Stout next. I have a feeling it's Guinness.
Unconfirmed rumour says Aldi's Highland Black whisky is actually Johnny Walker Black Label in a different bottle. A guy I know said he did a blind test and couldn't spot which was which. Will check on that.

    There we go.
Aldi's Finnbarrs Irish Stout is made by Beamish, Republic of Ireland.
The Highland Black whisky is made by Macdonald & Muir Ltd., Edinburgh. (Glenmorangie, Ardbeg, Crabbie's, etc.) Not Johnny Walker, then.

Also, (i'm not sure if I will get in trouble for this...) own label dishwasher tablets are virtually the same as big brands, in fact some have a better formula but we are not allowed to say on packets 'better than the leading brand....'

It's all about money for advertising at the end of the day!!

Not sure about your dishwasher tablets thing, I've used..
    Asda own brand,
    Tesco own brand,
    Glist,
    Finish.

Finish are by far the best, most expensive too  all the others leave horrid marks and a rather odd whiff! :rotfl: I don't think they're the same at all, Glist by far the worst!
    The £2.00 Coin Savers Club = approx £22.00  :j.. The 20p Savers Club = £17.80.

Don't bother with dishwasher tablets at all. They're far more expensive than own-brand dishwasher powder, particularly if you buy the largest packs of powder available. Also, it's easier to vary the quantity according to the dishes you have to wash if you use powder - e.g. how many, how dirty, etc. The tablets are just a scam to make you think you're buying something special.

On the subject of digestives, Sainsburys milk chocolate digestives are just the best!!! The chocolate is nice and they are just scrummy! I prefer them to McVities so whether its because the chocolate bit is nicer I don't know.

I don't know whether you mean JS Basics choc digestives, but I have to say they're great, and they hardly cost anything. Don't consider buying anything else.

  • I used to work for a particular company who supplied frozen chickens, there were 3 different sorts
1 badly bruised went out in cheap bags to cheap freezer shops
2 ok and went out with manufacturers label may have had slight bruising
3 went on a different line filled with more water to make em look plumper but then came back to production where we had to pull the bags (different name) as tight as possible as it gives the impression of a bigger bird and there was to be no bruising at all but the difference moneywise was a couple of quid

Had a repair man out to fix my washing machine. I mentioned that I'd got a lot of grey sludgy stuff out when cleaning the inside and the filter and pipes. Also mentioned that friends had commented on the amount of soap suds visible i.e. you couldn't see the washing. He asked me how much powder I used and at the time I was using Fairy tablets - half tab for half load, one tab for full load. He said I should halve the amount I was using (not easy to break tabs in half - they crumble and make a mess!) Now buying powder and using much less in each wash. Washing machine works well, clothes are just as clean and I'm saving money!

Not sure who makes them but have you tried Tesco Value jaffa cakes - half the price of the Tesco own brand in fancy packet but virtually identical when you look at the ingredients. Taste exactly the same. Also bought Tesco Value after dinner mints, friends brought round a box of Waitrose own brand and they were exactly the same thing. Not sure of price of Waitrose ones but as a former Waitrose shopper who's now trying to save money bet they're roughly double the price of the Tesco Value ones. THey were very yummy too!
