Great 'disguised Own Brand' Hunt.

It's not exciting, but I work for a company that packs salt and believe me salt is salt.
I can't believe how much people waste by buying saxa thinking it's better!!!!
Buy own label, it's all the same and so much cheaper.
This also applies to dishwasher salt (that the own label dishwasher salt is the same as branded)
Also, (i'm not sure if I will get in trouble for this...) own label dishwasher tablets are virtually the same as big brands, in fact some have a better formula but we are not allowed to say on packets 'better than the leading brand....'
It's all about money for advertising at the end of the day!!0 -
This is what I found on another website..

BMW - independent
Fiat - independent but GM has a stake
Jaguar - owned by Ford
Lambourghini - once owned by Chrysler, now owned by Audi
Lotus - GM has major stake
Maserati
Mercedes - controls the DaimlerChrysler conglomerate
MG - part of Rover
Mini - "borrowed" from Rover by BMW
Peugeot - independent
Porsche - still independent despite ties to Volkswagen-Audi Group
Renault - independent and controls Nissan

Out of date / wrong / incomplete, I'm afraid. I'm sure I've missed some out, too:
Where's Citroen? - part of Peugeot/Citroen group
Ferrari? - part of the FIAT group
FIAT - GM paid them a large sum of money to buy themselves out of the deal
Ford (!) - still largely owned by the Ford family. Has a Premier Auto Group (PAG) of Land Rover, Volvo, Aston Martin and Jaguar
ISUZU - part of GM
JEEP - part of DaimlerChrysler
Maserati - part of the FIAT group
MINI - owned by BMW
Mitsubishi - was part of the GM group, now left to fend for itself
Nissan - partnership with Renault, both run by Carlos Ghosn
Rolls-Royce - name owned by aero engine manufacturer which allows BMW to use it for the cars. AFAIK VW now has nothing to do with RR
Rover - who they?
Saab - part of GM
SMART - part of DaimlerChrysler
Subaru - close ties to GM
Vauxhall - part of GM, cars identical to continental Opel
Any others?Jumbo

Hi, have just tried the sainsbury Chocolate digestives (mentioned earlier on this forum ) and agree, that they are very yummy. :T
Also personally, I think that Tesco's Mayo, is just as tasty as Hellman's and a lot cheaper, i have tried a good few other shop brand mayo's, and none beat Tesco.0 -

Has anyone mentioned Sainsbury's Basics chocolate bars? 100g for 25p - tastes good to me, and to be quite honest for that price you can't go far wrong! (However I doubt that it's Galaxy or Cadbury's - certainly not Thorntons or Green and Blacks!).£2 coin savers club: £1.49

Do you mean Wickes? I would be more inclined to believe these unsubstantiated claims if you could spell the name of the company for whom you work0 -

dinkydee wrote:Would anyone else have the same opinion here as me, I have studied marketing and branding etc. It is my humble opinion that the German discounters Lidl and Aldi ( who I heard were brothers) get the brand leaders or close 2nds on their side by offering them sole provider in their stores which are nationwide, htis means their product would have no other competition in their stores by other brands, provided they go under the aldi/lidl packaging. This is why their quality is so good. Any of the branded products in these stores I would imagine are the same make as the lidl/aldi variety, perhaps this is to test which performs better when no other competitors are involved.
Your humble opinion is nothing but hard fact. ALDI and LIDL products are, to a great deal, made by the major brand producers, with minor adjustments and under strict secrecy in order not to cannibalise the heavily advertised premium brands. Taking into account the huge bulk they sell on the Continent, there can't be any other way. A small producer could never supply the amounts that go over ALDI and LIDL's tills.
Some of ALDI's products name the producer on the packing. (Haribo, HAns RIegel BOnn, or the vitamin gums, which come from Dortmund.) This doesn't happen at LIDL; all you will find "Produced for Lidl Stiftung & Co. Neckarsulm.
ALDI is extremely secretive, but LIDL is like the NSA when it comes protecting internal stuff or suppliers from the public.
It takes some thorough googling, but one will find lists on the web with the actual producers of ALDI's and LIDL's own brands.
There's also a book: Aldi -
Aldi - Welche Marke steckt dahinter?
(What's the brand behind it?)
by Martina Schneider
In German only. Available at amazon.co.uk
Off topic, but needs mentioning:
It is a common misconception in the UK that ALDI and LIDL belong to the same company. This is wrong, they are entirely separate and in fierce competition with each other. Both are privately owned.
ALDI belongs to the brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht, two billionaires in their eighties and Europe's richest men. They started with a small store after the war, then invented the discount idea and spread out. They dominate the German discount retail market, with Theo holding the north and Karl the south of Germany. ALDI UK and Ireland is part of the ALDI Sued empire (Karl Albrecht).
LIDL belongs to Dieter Schwarz, also a billionaire, who copied the hard retail concept of ALDI in a very successful manner. LIDL has grown massively over the last years and is said to be more successful in its European expansion than ALDI.0 -

Made chocolate brownies last week, using mainly sains own brand chocolate, but for the topping, i used their basics chocolate - dark and white.
Basics was nicer than the normal own brand!
Tesco Value Jaffa Cakes - taste exactly the same as all other brands of Jaffa cakes.Blood donations to date: 10 | Type: O negative[/B][/CENTER]0
