bump up this threadHi. Martin has asked me to tell you that I'm the Board Guide on the The Most Popular Chat Tips Ever Board board, which means I'm a volunteer to help the board(s) run smoothly, and I can move and change posts there. However, do remember, board guides don't read every post. If you spot an abusive or illegal post then please report it to abuse@moneysavingexpert (it's not part of my role to deal with abuse). What a huge thread!
Anyone able to give me a quick run down on the best ones?
Thanks!0 -
The conventional wisdom is you get what you pay for.
However, this is often not the case. Anyone familiar with brand management will confirm that identical products are often rebranded using different packaging so they can be sold at different prices to different classes of consumer.
As we all know, Tesco has 4 grades of branding:
- Finest (luxury, expensive)
- Original manufacturer's advertised brand (e.g. 'Weetabix')
- Tesco packaged brand (e.g. 'Tesco Whole Wheat Biscuits')
- Value (blue & white striped; intended to offend bourgeois sensibilities so that richer people don't buy them)
So does anyone know which Tesco packaged brands and Value brands are exactly the same as the original manufacturer's advertised brand in every way (apart from packaging and price, obviously)?
For instance, as far as I can see Tesco Value tuna in brine is exactly the same as John West tuna in brine; and Tesco Whole Wheat Biscuits are exactly the same as Weetabix.0 -

I have a very old pair or UFO trainers (£15) which are commonly sold at markets and are now worn out so I bought a pair of genuine Acpuncture trainers (£50) which were similar looking. When I got home I compared the two I found that the shoes were exactly the same from the material, design and even the stitching is absolutely identical.
I would swear on my life that these come from the same production line.0 -

This makes perfect sense. KP nuts have a budget brand. I cant remember the name they use but when I looked at the back of a pack they had the kp address and the same ingredients and nutritional info. This makes sense as KP can squeeze more profit by selling more nuts at a lower profit margin (but a profit nonetheless) and not damaging the main brand for the 'label led' consumer. However, the budget bags may be lower quality nuts and there is no way of knowing and the company wont tell you.
I am certainly inspired to try more 'own brands', the only way is to try!0 -
