Milk is milk so go for the cheapest, what is this filtered stuff anyway?

    Have a look here

The process can be used as an alternative to pastuerisation, however in the UK it is usually used in conjuction. The milk has less bacteria and therefore remains fresher for longer.

I would never go for the cheapest milk, Organic is best, tests have proved it.

    Organic milk is better for you, I have been told that ordinary milk is from cows who have been fed hormones etc to increase milk yield. Females can be affected by drinking this milk with extra hormones and this can affect their hormonal balance. I have always bought organic since then as this makes information made sense to me.;

i believe iwatched a programme which revealed 'organic' vegetables can have upto 8 different pesticides used on them and still use the 'organic' label. so not quite as organic as you think!

I have a relative who works in a factory that deals with potatoes (bags them up I think!). She says that M&S and Sainsburys get the first pick of the best potatoes and then the other supermarkets follow. I think Asda were quite low down on the list! Im glad I shop at Sainsburys!

Nonsense Farmers in the UK are not allowed to use hormones. And if they did they would soon be found out, and have nowhere to sell their produce. Trust me, I'm a farmer!
It's disgraceful that someone has told you this nonsense, to spite them, I suggest that you switch to non organic milk, and become a money-saver.

a person that actually knows what they are talking about :T

if scientifically u looked at "organic" products then u would see that they are no more organic than standard cheaper food.

as someone that knows lots about these industries , im quite shocked at some of the wrong information that is being posted.
  • Me?? Alcoholic?? Hmmm not sure I know the meaning of the word :D

Scottish Courage Ltd (Soon to be known as S & N UK) has various different brands as their own, John Smiths, Fosters, Kronenburg (Our restaurant at work is known as JFK) & Strongbow which will all be made there, but they do supply other brands too on behalf of other brewers, Guinness, Budweiser, Carlsberg... etc if they agree to sell ours, so they are more likely picking up beer to take to their own depots to sell on for us.

But with S & N selling own brand bitters to supermarkets, they also get it cheaper depending on which shelf they agree to put it on!

I used to work in one of their (scottish courage/scottish and newcastle as it was then) john barrass pubs about 6-7 years ago.
we used to stock smiths, fosters, kronenbourg and strongbow on draught cos we (well, our brewery) owned them, and we also stocked another brand of cheaper bitter (which i don't think we owned) and guiness (cos we never owned a similar brand).
then came the tricks with the fridges:
top shelf was for our brands and high profit ones, middle shelves were for medium profit and bottom shelf for low profit.
we stocked brands from other breweries but it was usually only bottles, and they were hard to spot- especially if we never made much money on them.

we used to have 'spin the wheel' promotions (i can reveal this trick cos the brewery hasn't got that pub anymore), in our pub we had a regular crowd so we just used it to reduce the price of whatever the regulars were drinking.
it always went to vote around the bar :rotfl:

by the way, if your local pub is doing £1 a pint type promotions- stay away, its inferior tasting and short dated, being sold off cheap by breweries.
a lot of publicans won't have it in their pubs cos it is revolting, and i know about this cos our bosses used to tell us that was why we did very few promotions while the pubs in the centre were doing £1 a pint, the regulars knew about this, and the landlord where i go drinking now says that it is true and he won't touch it either
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)
BH is my best mate too, its ok :)

I trust BH even if he's from Manchester.. ;)

  • on the subject of drink- ever had a dodgy glass of coke in a pub?
    i might know why...
coke on draft machines is powered by a machine in the cellar, pubs buy big bags of a sugar type mixture from the breweries (used to cost £130 when i worked in a pub 7 years ago) and if you get a dodgy glass- chances are it is similar to bottom of the barrel beer.
best to drink bottles if on non alcoholic- certain pubs water down soft drink mixtures and really bad ones water down spirits

Oh my goodness I don't think I've ever read such a long thread!! I am exhausted! Very interesting and I'm sure I won't be at the end for long!!! :rotfl:
Here dead we lie because we did not choose
To live and shame the land from which we sprung.
Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is,
