  • Here's a list of some companies that DO and DON'T make for the Supermarkets' Own-Labels.

I've only put the ones I know for SURE, to avoid misleading and any doubt.
Also, I've not put which supermarket brands. Generally, if a company makes for one supermarket, they'll make for all the major ones!

BRANDS THAT DON'T MAKE FOR SUPERMARKET OWN-LABEL
    KELLOGG'S CEREALS
    WALKER'S CRISPS
    CADBURY'S CHOCOLATE
    MARS CHOCOLATE
Unilever: Persil, Dove skincare, Wall's & Magnum ice cream.
Proctor & Gamble: Ariel, Fairy Liquid, Pringles.
    Johnson's Baby skincare.

In most of these cases, you can tell the difference.

BRANDS THAT DO MAKE FOR SUPERMARKET OWN-LABEL
NESTLE CEREALS (incl Cheerios, Shreddies, Shredded Wheat)
WEETABIX CEREALS (inc Weetabix itself, and Weetos)
    JORDAN'S CEREALS
    McVitie's Biscuits, and cakes
    Jacob's Biscuits
    Fox's Biscuits
    Burton's Biscuits
    Walker's Shortbread

On these ones, feel free to fill your boots (or shopping trolleys for that matter) with the Own-Label versions, and make some big savings.

I don't use ariel washing powder a I'm pretty sure it's what caused my rash a few years back! Never used Tescos tho...

My dad had a similar problem- have you tried using the "non biological" types? they usually help stop any allergy rash or itching related to washing powders- if this is what it is.
  • According to a builder friend of mine Ikea's kitchens are made by Franke which is a top brand.

All black eyeliners for sale in this country are made in the same factory in Germany, the different cosmetic brands just specify softness levels for their brand.

I can absolutely confirm this is made by Estee Lauder. In the US it's sold as Good Skin also, with the four circles logo. You can only get it in better department stores and is usually more expensive than the 'drug store' brands. Paula Begoun gives the range a good write-up - the only bad points are the lack of sunscreen in the moisturisers, poor packaging and sales help hard to find.
  • Looking for a new Washer/dryer, anyone know who makes John Lewis own brand white goods?

I've also heard they might be made by AEG. However my sister got a free 3 year warranty on her John Lewis brand washer dryer, which maybe worth taking into account.

Cheap TV's, DVD's etc don't last long. They are designed with cheap parts, and are not designed to last that long. ALBA, BUSH, GOODMANS, MURPHY RICHARDS are all the same company that make cheap rubbish. I had a ALBA stereo and it lasted 2 months until the tape deck broke, then 2 months later the CD player broke what a waste of £80.00.

I replaced this with JVC CD / Radio / Minidic player 10 years later still going strong £199 well spent.

we had a JVC CRT 20inch TV still going strong after almost 20 years, Panasonic Widescreen TV still going after almost 11 years.

Bush DVD Player died after 13 months (just as the warrenty wares off) - didn't like playing all DVD's anyway (were orignial discs too) . cost £15.00. Now got a Philips cost over twice as much at £50 and still working after 3 years and plays all discs..

Now Got a JVC LCD TV with 5 year warrenty (cheap TV's only come with 12 months warrenty).

It may be cheaper in the beginning but do you want to spead £100 every year on a replacement or go that bit extra and pay double the price and let it last 10 years plus.

At the end of the day you pay for Quality, if you are a tight !!!! you will end up spending more in the long run anyway.

my present telly is a goodmans and is almost 8 years old

Ditto- got my TV (Goodmans) in 2004, its still going strong! This includes all sorts of mal-treatment- plenty of channel hopping (I don't do adverts), leaving it on all night while I fall asleep, not hovering it for 3 years before I owned a hoover (laminate floor + minimum wage job= no real need for a hoover).

I have also got- or had a panasonic freeview box. It lasted just under 2 years. My Apple Ipod nano laster 18 months, my phillips epilator broke within warrenty, my Brita kettle broke 2 years down the line, my mum's got plenty of labels that break more then mine do! -(I can't afford labels) but my technika alarm clock radio is still going strong- years old- think it could be older then the TV (don't recall actually buying it:confused: :rotfl: !) my swan kettle worked for years (5) before being upgraded to a better model.- I threw out the old one and it hadn't even broken!

Goodmans work great for me- don't think its "cheap rubbish" at all!

I'm afraid that's not true - at least for most of their kitchens. I worked for a firm that sourced kitchens for most of the big brands, including MFI. They got a lot of their kitchens from firms in Italy, near Venice. I went out there to meet their suppliers (hardship;)) and look round the factories. There were 4 different suppliers producing different types of kitchens, depending on the quality required. They ranged from solid MDF mouldings covered in "foil" (plastic sheet) to solid wood-built doors. They were producing kitchens for most of the major manufacturers in these factories, including Ikea. They were all made on the same lines, but the differences were in the quality of materials and complexity of the build. (I could bore for hours on the differences, but will let you off that)

Obviously some kitchens will be made elsewhere, but the firm I worked for supplied over 50% of MFI's kitchens from these factories.

Definitely not. Cadbury don't make CHOC bars (eg, Dairy Milk) for anyone else.

The company that licences the Cadbury name for Cakes (eg, Mini Rolls) DO make mini rolls & choc cakes for Sainsbury, Tesco, etc - so in that respect, Cadbury's is a bit of a complicated one.
