Your foolish assumption would be correct, the front brakes are the most powerful when the vehicle weight is transferred. They are not however if someone ever carried out the suggestion made by that poster of yanking the handbrake instead of stamping on the brakes, you'd then have the rears taking up all the braking force of the car. Depending on the split it could be anywhere from 40-100% of the brakes.
I'm not trying to be funny or anything, but it seems you don't actually understand how brakes work.
A handbrake will, at best, give you about 10-20% of the braking force of the footbrake before the rear wheels simply lock up. It's not a particularly effective way of slowing down a car, as anyone who has experienced brake failure will tell you. Better than nothing in an emergency (Americans refer to the handbrake as the "emergency brake", btw), but the idea that the car will stop quickly or spin out of control is simply wrong."There may be a legal obligation to obey, but there will be no moral obligation to obey. When it comes to history, it will be the people who broke the law for freedom that will be remembered and honoured." --Rt. Hon. Tony Benn0 -

I know cars have an 80/20 or varying brake bias split, not sure if this is mainly when the car is stationary and it alters depending on where the load is being placed. If you yanked a handbrake however besides being stupid you run the chance of ruining your disks and fusing the pads. Also it wouldn't be smart anyway, if you yank a handbrake you get no warning so there's more chance of a tailgater going into you
If you think a car won't spin out of control with handbrake I suggest you go drive a road when it freezes with black ice at 30-40mph then pull harsh on the handbrake and try to turn. Your car will fish tail like hell then you'll either crash or recover it depending on how good a driver you areOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

All I do is ignore them. OK, I might slow down as a rear end shunt at 30mph is less dangerous than one at 50. I stick to the speed limit at the most and if they flash their lights I just keep pace with the traffic on my left for as long as I can without making it look deliberate.
If someone comes up behind me quickly but slows down and keeps their distance then I get out of the way as soon as I can.[strike]-£20,000[/strike] 0!0 -
I don't passively try to annoy tailgaters, like I say. I'm over that now in my elder years, luckily it's easier for me as where I live it's not as busy. I can imagine like places where you live would be worse being the capital traffic must be a nightmareOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

Coming from someone who suggested pulling on a handbrake and increasing the chance of a crash happening from the rear end without warning.
Make sure when you go drive on some black ice and crash after pulling the handbrake you record it so I can say to your relatives "told you so" when you die.
I'm not going to waste my time arguing further anyway, I've said my piece in this topic and I'm off to browse more topics. Whine as much as you want if you don't like itOwner of andrewhope.co.uk, hate cars and love them

In an *obviously* tongue-in-cheek post. Everyone else seems to have realised it was just a bit of joke..."There may be a legal obligation to obey, but there will be no moral obligation to obey.
