I'd just like to say I'm so proud of myself that I'm ...well, not sitting on my hands but not getting involved. Maybe I'll add some points tomoorow, but tonight wild swimming seems so much more....relaxing, than this.
Interesting points all...carry on.0 -
i think as people mix across borders things are going to have to change. i mean take my MIL (to quote a bad comedian), how can it be sensible or even humane to have to jump through such loops just to have a relative visit you. when we went to the court there were others in similar situations. a nurse from zimbabwe was infront of us and she wanted her mum to visit her in the uk. the judge was paid highly to ask such sensible questions as "can you think of a reason why you mother might want to come and live in the uk". a very expensive version of the US visitor forms that ask "are you, or have you ever been, a member of a terrorist organization".Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0

People always have to jump through hoops ninky. The question is which hoops are necessary. I would gather it's expensive to remove someone once here. So more efficient to check at point of entry (or country of exit).0 -
Thatcher was warned when she wanted to close down the mines. Mining and similar jobs are sh*t but because people had a pride in going to work people did them if they could do nothing else.
Yes there were always those who did nothing but not to the same extent.
I'm no fan of Thatcher, but I don't remember there being any coal mines in the area the programme was based.
There have always been low paid, low skilled agricultural picking / sorting and packing jobs in that location. Never been well paid, frequently paid by 'piece-work', often seasonal, but why were British people prepared to do that work 20 years ago but not now ?
One of the unintended consequences of minimum wage (and I believe in it in principle) is that it removes the incentive for certain people to learn the job, get up to speed and graft & at the same time removes the incentive for employers to employee people who can't / won't work quick enough.0 -

so why bother removing them? if there were no borders our services such as health and education would be operated and paid for along totally different lines (probably not a bad thing seeing as the whole thing seems pretty unsustainable in the current form).
plus why is someone with a husband and several other children going to leave their homeland to live in a country in which they can't speak a word of the language. she's not of working age and her OH has a finally salary pension. plus they have access to free healthcare where they are. i also don't think she is interested in the nightclubs or free flowing booze of the west at her time of life. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

Yep, let's see a programme about IT graduates who were duped into running up a £15K debt for their BSc. Then they find that UK plc has outsourced IT and Indians come in on a visa as there is a 'skills shortage'. And I've seen such Indians with the beginner's guide book open under their desk...[/QUOTE]
Rubbishing British IT graduates now?
Some people...
Oh and regarding the unemployed graduates, I used that example on purpose.
The show was nothing more than garbage.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

The guy that didn't turn up to the potato factory was 26 and had been unemployed for five years if I recall correctly, this guy got a 20% payrise in his benefit last year and still lives with his parents.
I don't think it was a set up, the presenter kept well out of the way for most ofi= it.
Personally I was ashamed on behalf of this country at the abject racism shown by the guy at the factory.
It was a set up.
They just chose the worst unemployed bums they could find, then trump up how well immigrants are doing in low level jobs...
You have to laugh.
Don't forget that these 'immigrants' also use the NHS, claim benefits also, which is pushing the NHS further over the point of breaking.
And yes I have been in the job centre, hoodie heaven if I can remember lolHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Because of the concept of moral hazzard. In combination with the S.Africa example I supplied you with earlier.plus why is someone with a husband and several other children going to leave their homeland to live in a country in which they can't speak a word of the language.
Many do. I suggest you ask them.0 -
immigrants who work pay tax who then pay the benefits for the brits out of work.
what's wrong with that?
Really? ALOT of work that I know immigrants do is cash in hand. Polish workers for example in kings lynn is a good example.
Sorry but all these immigrants coming over and paying for brits to sit on their backside is trot.
If anything, immigrants are a burden, except to small business who love cheap labour.
If I had it my way, our immigration policy would reflect that of Australia.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
