Have just sent my remaining £5 to Lloyds as I'm not doing anything between now and Friday when I get my next lot of pocket money.

Only need another £29.25 needed to achieve the target I set myself.

Apparently clearing your balance before your statement date isn't enough to stop Virgin applying £14.04 of interest

Had some good news though, have just renewed my car insurance and the first payment isn't due until 1st May, so sent another £32.34 to Lloyds this morning. Only wish I had received my Virgin statement before doing this, as I have had to take that £14.04 out of my spending money.

I have therefore beat my target of finding £50 extra already - feel like I have cheated though with the car insurance money being unexpectedly spare - so will still try and find that extra £29.25 from somewhere.

    Hi Woowoo
With regards to the above interest, I closed my halifax credit card and as far as i was concern it was all done and dusted but them the statement came in an i owned them a similar amount as you, so i rang them and said if i owed them interest why wasn't i told when i made the final payment and why was i allowed to close the account, well anyway they let me off with the interest on that occasion as it was there error - might be worth having a word with them no guarentees though.

Also what a brilliant thread, have subscribe to keep up with how you are getting on

Woowoo, I love your applying the 96p straight to the cards, it's the way we think too. I know jars collecting coins for things is a good for some people, but for me I'd rather put in a savings account if it's spare, or I'd pay it off debts when I've had them, otherwise to me it's wasting money.

With credit cards it's in the small print on how they calculate interest, as to why they still come up with this final charge. It can be worth double checking with them how much you need by when to finally close the account. At times when we've wanted to close an account (or stop paying interest and still use it), we've guessed how much the closing extra would be and overpaid, and got a refund when we've closed the account.

Thanks, I did close the account last week by email though, so think I will give them a call tomorrow just to check I did actually need to pay it.
