Like a previous poster said, supermarkets exist to extract as much money as possible from you. How else do they continually announce 'record' profits whilst 'saving' you money. Do you know what we do when we go shopping? We finish our shop and then go through it before way pay, dumping all those items Sainsbury's decided we needed that actually we didn't after all. Saves us a lot of money.

I've noticed the value stuff is disappearing in my Tesco too. I shall definately stock up on the value dishwasher tablets when i go as they are brilliant (and i only use half a tablet at a time)

I usually shop at Morrison's - 1 big shop per month and then top up shops.
Ive noticed that my monthly shop seems to be going up quite a bit at Morrisons. am pretty lucky that i have a few shops nearby each other and i can get various bits in different shops. I've done my monthly online shop with Asda this month and it seems to be quite a bit cheaper-so far. Managed to make £14 savings and i got a voucher for free delivery-another £4.50 saving. I havent bought my milk and bread online, but its still going to work out cheaper. Farm Foods are doing 2 4 pts of milk for £1.50, so i'll get it there and morrisons do the bread i like at 2 for £1 at the moment. I guess it pays to shop around...

You are right, it does pay to shop around, I have heard folk say that it takes too long to trail the shops and it is quicker to do your shop in the one place, well, to those folk, stop moaning about the price of goods, it may take you an hour or so longer, but if it means saving £40- £45 per month it is well worth it.

It is also good to take advantage of the bogof deals and share the cost of them with family/friends.

And you've just reminded me I forgot to buy Marmite:) Which incidentally I have another question about - I always used to buy own brand yeast extract instead of Marmite - I can't find that in any shops locally - has it been discontinued across the board?

I noticed two or three weeks ago that my local Tesco's were not stocking their own brand yeast extract, when I have bought it from there a few weeks before that. Not even empty space on the shelves, no mention of it.

Vegemite definitely not the same, own brands not as good as Marmite, but ok for the lower price.

Personally - i think it takes too long to shop around, although it definately doesn't mean i miss out on savings of £40 - 45 a month - I think the most i would be most i would spend a month would be about £120. My most recent shop cost £44 in Sainsburies and that should last me 2 weeks, obviously buying some fresh milk, bread, fruit and veg for the 2nd week (max £7).
I normally would shop in Tesco, Sainsburies I find expensive but I was in the shopping centre for other stuff so decided to do the grocery shop in it! Asda - i do find the cheapest - but the quality not as good!

If i shopped around - it would take 10 mins to drive between the major supermarkets as they are not all beside each other, and the petrol costs would outway the savings.
The only amoutn of shopping around i do - is for offers in my local centra and spar - i check out their offers before the main supermarket shop!

Don't know if this could help you cut costs, but I use the value washing powder in my dishwasher and my dishes come out perfectly. I think this probably works out even cheaper than the tablets? I also use the powder for my white washes. Currently £1.74 per box. HTH

Tescos is really expensive now, Its fuel is even 1p or 2p more expensive than shell fuel in our area. This is why i have stoped shopping there.

I have found more recently that Asda are cutting down on diffferent brands and opting to place their own there instead.....Some things also seem to be disappear for a while e.g caffeine free coke wasn't available the last few weeks...

We have found that Lidl has been a money saver for us recently particulary with things like milk and potatoes.

We do however get some things at Tesco as there is more brand choice and some things are better quality than Asda e.g their household wipes that we used to get there went really thin and horrid where as tesco are better quality so we use less....I wouldn't recommmend Tesco normal dishwasher tablets as they were terrible, lots of streaks and left over food
