Discussion thread on Supermarket prices - are they becoming too high?

Asda seemed cheap to me tonight, but I suppose with the VAT increase and the £ being weak it's going to affect prices. Tesco had Marmite at £2.03 last week, then it was £2.50 odd the next time I went. Still £2.03 in Asda.0

Maybe I should give Asda a try then. It just took me ages to work out a happy balance of which branded/own brand/value items worked best for us and I'm not looking forward to going through that process again! And you've just reminded me I forgot to buy Marmite:) Which incidentally I have another question about - I always used to buy own brand yeast extract instead of Marmite - I can't find that in any shops locally - has it been discontinued across the board?0

They still do the value dishwash tabs at my Tesco-maybe I need to stock up,as they came out top on the Which report and are so cheap too. I bought Tescos own brand yeast extract 2 weeks ago, perhaps it's something to do with online shop, a bit of a con to make you spend more? I haven't noticed my shop going up at Tesco or Asda. BTW,do you water that fruit juice down for your children? My best friend is a dental hygienist and told me to either water it down 50:50 as it is full of natural sugar and very acidic,or to limit it to once a day with food. Luckily my kids drink more water than anything else.Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!0

Flexibility is the only way round it. I decide how much I'm going to spend and tweak my purchases accordingly for best value, rather than buying from a set list. It's not as if I'm going to starve doing this. I eat blimmin' well.0

Interesting to know that own brand yeast extract still exists, will have to search that down! We've not had value dishwasher tabs in our local Tesco for quite a while, I've started using "Daisy" discount brand dishwasher powder, which actually I'm quite happy with - its about a fiver for a huge tub, but as we only have a slimline dishwasher it prob works out as cheap as the tabs as I can put less in (can't be doing with cutting tabs in half etc!)
I do water down the kids' juice (not as much as 50/50 though), but we still get through 2/3 cartons a week. I swear more of it ends up on the floor than in their tummies though! (thank god for hardwood floors!)0 -
This is really interesting. I posted another thread today talking about how Tesco seem to be getting rid of the value range and replacing with "discount brands" which are MUCH more expensive!
I wonder if the days of "value" food are numbered?0 -
The one I have noticed is not so much a price increase , more of a weight decrease.
Have noticed that thier basic sweetcorn can has shrunk to the size of their basic carrots and peas size cans. But they still charge the old price of 29p.
Edit : Having just looked at thier site, I think the cans are even smaller!
A weight decrease is in effect a sly price increase.Like good food and drink?

Tesco are bad for that, they advertise great offers on one product, when you get there, the item is never there, but they have you in the store, so you will spend, when the offer is over, the 'offer price' item mysteriously appears on the shelf.Like good food and drink?

I've really noticed my online Tesco shop becoming more expensive.
Could it be that when you shop online their system tell you that the item you want is not available and suggests a more expensive product, when the item is actually available in the store?
After all, if you are ordering online it's because you are not going to be going to the store and notice the items you ordered is actually in stock. So if you try to order something and they say they "don't have it, order something more expensive" you won't know if it's the truth or not.0 -
Hasn't anyone noticed that when Sainsbury's do their discount offers - is it tue or wed, the prices change? That although they reduce some stuff, and it is a bargain at that price, they increase the prices on other goods. This is how they keep making their money.
Since being on a really tight budget, I noticed this the first week I was trying to shop. Pease Pudding cans were only 19p, which was great, a real bargain, but they had increased prices on other things to compensate for it.
It is a Wednesday, you are right about putting up prices of other goods, I wittnesd three price increases on 6 pack Pepsi in two weeks.:eek:Like good food and drink?
