Discussion thread on Supermarket prices - are they becoming too high?

I agree that there are sneaky supermarket pricing practices, but in this instance it could genuinely be a supplier issue, as they have to get the flour from somewhere.Last night I was in Asda buying the usual suspects and was horrified to notice a price increase of 13 pence on a pack of bakery granary rolls!!! These rolls used to be 52p AND on the 3 for £1 offer. So now if I buy 12 rolls I'll have to pay £1.95 instead of £1
I called Asda customer care and asked for an explanation - I was told it was a supplier issue, despite it being an instore bakery item.0 -

The cost of the flour is only one part of the cost of a roll. There are other costs to, such as fuel, wages etc.
If the cost of the flour has gone up so much that it doubles the cost of the roll we would have heard about it on the news.
Not to mention noticing the increase in the price of flour on the shelves, and the increase in price of every other product that has flour in it.0 -
I'm not talking about the average cost of flour, milling wheat prices have gone way down since the spike in 2008, what I mean is if they source local flour for example and the supplier can't supply for whatever reason.0

At my local store in Plymouth I've noticed quite a few basic's items are going up in price, some are now just a couple of pence cheaper than named brands.
Is this a permanent increase?

I did notice on some of their own brand tins the price had gone up over 10% since last week on the two items I buy.0 -
Their basics shortbread has gone up to 21p from about 14p a couple of weeks ago.0

Just been in Sainsburys today and noticed the basic broccoli and carrots are more expensive than the loose broccoli and carrots by quite a lot (can't remember how much though).0

the jaffa cakes have gone up in ours from 36p to 59p, big increase, but still way cheaper than mcvities or whoever makes the others0

Basics? Are they really any good?
I appreciate fruit and veg are fine, just may get odd shaped carrots, but the packaged stuff. Not been that impressed (although not tried it for a long time)
Just to love Tesco Value ready salted crisps, in the clear bag with blue and white stripes. I hate to think now of the amount of saturated fats and slat in each bag0 -
I think a lot of the Basics stuff is really good, there's a thread on this board about which items people find to be good/bad, but most of them seem to be rated really well.
I was a bit disappointed by how much the jaffa cakes had gone up though!D'you know, in 900 years of space and time, I've never met anyone who wasn't importantTaste The Rainbow :heartsmil0
