To be fair, the board guide Penelope Penguin did announce her intention to move the thread to this section of the forum, so it was ear-marked to be moved almost as soon as it was started, and although I think it would have faired better in the OS section, I understand the logic with it being grocery related.

What is disappointing though, is that it's been merged with this thread.......Discussion thread on Supermarket prices - are they becoming too high? is not the same topic as whether or not members think Basic/Smart Price/Value ranges were being phased out across the country

The thread was merged as it was discussing the rising prices of groceries.

If someone would like to start a thread on here about the phasing out of basic labelled groceries then feel welcome, however any discussions on the increased prices of food should remain in this thread to keep this board tidy.

are the price rises in the value stuff a reaction to the advice to "trade down"? More people are now buying the cheaper ranges so the supermarkets hike the prices up?

    Thats me being cynical!!
No, you're not being cynical (if you are then you're not alone ;)). I have been buying the basics range since my DS1 was a baby (he's 19 now ). Back then hardly anyone ever bought the cheap stuff, but being a single mum on benefit at the time I had no choice, most weeks I had £10 for a weeks shopping. Bread was 7p a loaf, beans were around 9p a tin and tinned tomatoes were a staggering 14p a tin.

Now there are 5 of us, no benefits and we still buy basics (because we're still poor :D). I do agree that the prices have gone up greatly because it's "fashionable" to buy basics. Hopefully those who do it for fun will soon tire of it and go back to their "quality" brands and then the supermarkets will drop the prices again for the rest of us.

And just to join in: Waitrose is so expensive that I wouldn't even consider it to browse!

Anyway - I get to to Te$cos this morning to find they have no loose common tomatoes or cooking apples. All that was available was a pack of 6 tomatoes for 88p and a bag of 5 cooking apples for £1.37, neither of which I could buy as I didn't have enough money with me  and even if I had, I didn't want 5 cooking apples and 6 tomatoes.......yes, I could find a way to use them up, but that's not the point here.

Are they moving towards a point where we have to buy all fruit and veg as part of a multi-pack?

was there a gap where the apples and tomatoes should go as they could have been out of stock, maybe none was sent on the delivery

on another note price maybe high but theres overheads etc to pay, suppliers take they're cut but its down to us to buy the cheapest item

No - no spaces. And the bag of cooking apples had 'new' on the outside of the bag....presumably because they're replacing the option of buying loose apples. I don't think, in all my adult life, I have ever been to any supermarket and not been able to buy standard tomatoes loose, which is why it makes me wonder if that's something else that might be being phased out.

I did buy the cheapest item...two standard tomotoes (not plum, cherry of beef) and a Bramley - nowt fancy about that.

Unfortunately this is twaddle. For one thing, the article says waitrose is the top price cutter, not the cheapest. It is easy to be the top price cutter if your prices start off higher than the rest.

Also the prices quoted do not appear to be correct. They list english butter as being 84p in waitrose and 88p in tesco. I've just looked on their web sites and tesco value butter is 94p and waitrose essentials butter is also 94p.

They appear to have gone up 10p since last week!

Same with bread, waitrose essentials 75p tesco value 74p

    Afternoon all :)

I have just got back from Te$cos and I am fuming!

A recipe I am making today requires 1 Cooking Apple and 2 Common Tomatoes. So, I check the price on My$upermarket and work out how much money I need to take with me for those and a few other bits that I need - I always try and take as near to the correct money with me when I shop as I can as it prevents impulse buying :)

I made this recipe just over a month ago, and bought my tomatoes and apple from Te$cos then. So what's going on? Are they moving towards a point where we have to buy all fruit and veg as part of a multi-pack?

And to make matters worse, I then had to buy the apple and tomatoes from my local green grocer - 99p for 1 Apple and 2 Tomatoes  Which then meant I didn't have enough money to buy the 8 pints of milk I wanted from Icel@nd, so had to make do with 4.

I often see posts from others on the forum who are on a budget who say they buy their fruit and veg from their local green grocer, but how on earth can people afford to do that?

Ok, sorry, rant over :o but what a frustrating 45 minutes

Think you may have hit the nail on the head there cbsexec

Why do you say Te$co and not Tesco?
    Gone ... or have I?

Well this thread certainly wont get the responses that we were hoping to discuss - how annoying.

So what can we do? Do we go back to the It is tough NOW. So how are we coping thread where we came up with the idea to start a new thread asking everyone if they thought the Basic/Smart Price/Value ranges were being phased out across the country - or do we try and start another thread with something along the lines of Basics/Value/Smart Price - Do You Think The Top 3 Supermarkets Are Phasing Them Out? as a title and hope that it won't get merged?

I am a bit disconbobulated whats happened...but at my age I do get easily confused! I'm heading back to the 'Its tough NOW..'thread and will confine my price witterings to there :)
