When I have these vouchers, and I don't need enough groceries to make up the money, I will buy clothes or shoes. It is unfortunate if they are the wrong size/colour etc and they have to be returned..............0 -
I'm just wondering, (possibly wandering too!) and I have no data to back this up and am just thinking aloud - but when we officially dipped in the recession all the supermarkets made a big thing about 'helping' in difficult times, lowering prices, keeping them low, blah blah blah. Are they now trying to quietly take prices back either to where they were, and/or adding a bit more on top to make up for the bit they took off in the first place? Another possible reason behind it - is another 'supermarket price war' imminents, so they are setting themselves up to 'drop' prices be hiking them up in readiness? Or am I just a suspicious and cynical old witch?
Only the first two adjectives apply...the big names have a manipulative and exploitative marketing strategies so w are forced to be cynical and suspicious shoppers to avoid being ripped off...and most of us simply can't afford to pay the extra.
Sorry for the large type but can't find my specs this morning!:)
I can believe that the prices are something to do with the strong pound and the weak euro - but surely the supermarkets have contracts with their suppliers which peg the prices to a set rate for a fixed period?
Supermarkets exist to make as big a profit as possible and all the hype that they give us about 'rollback' and 'value' are just windowdressing to get us into their stores as most people will just go ahead and do a full shop regardless once they are in store.
I am buying a couple of grow bags and getting my tomato plants on the go this week- hoping to freeze the surplus to save on buying tinned which are getting outrageously expensive:heartpuls The best things in life aren't things :heartpuls

In wartime - and this is a kind of war isnt it? us against them- our grannies would have found a way round this. If there were NO tomatoes at all, what would they/you do ? use puree and herbs more? I'm not a cook, I don't know. But when you read some of the fabulous inventive things they did then to feed their families...we have to live up to that.
I cant see how Scottish butter can have gone up in price, jsut can't see a reason. No euro, no sudden industrial unrest from the coos, nothing!
We didnt get up to Sainsbugs last night, his nibs wasnt well. Going tomorrow first thing and I will have my hidden camera doon my bra, a hidden mic in my sleeve, and a black balaclava on. Nobody will suspect a thing :eek:0 -
Soft cheese (the own-brand Philadelphia-ish stuff) seems to have increased in every supermarket. I'm sure it was about 60p/2 for £1, and now it's 95p.
I've been noting the price changes of Baxter's veggie soup (sad, I know!) as it has gone up slowly from 60p to nearly £1 - but recently dropped back to 60p and started to rise again.
I'm also convinced that there's price fixing going on in the Halloumi cheese market... :rotfl:0 -
If cheese and butter is going up then milk must follow.. there's only two of us here and we go through 18 pints a week. I need my tea !!!
EDITED- is it jsut me or is anybody else finding this site very slow ?0 -
Ahh im glad in not only one who notices these things hubby things im bit potty but I study receipt see if they overcharges and sometimes i pause for ages in ailses comparing best butter deal or weight/offers on cheese.
we mostly do sainsurys lidls as opposite each other.
lidls cheaper for tinned tomatoes, sometimes have shortdated branded butter and some speciality cheses cheap like parmasan , soft cheses.
However im careful in lidls as some sainsburys basics cheaper than lidls.
Hoping value bog roll in sainsburys does not go up from 45p.
one gutting fact for me is sainsburys twin pack tiramasu from 95p to 1.30 but cheaper than co-op which is 1.50, oddly huge tiramasu only gone up penny from 1.99 to 2quid.
was in morrisions other day their value 3pack oprange juice is 37p seems cheap compared to others . Their own brand value passata chepest i seen at 25p but was none on shelf.
wish foil, clingfoil and black bags not so pricey
Used to work for iceland and then they rounded up prices to quid but things got smaller but people couldent see they were not as good value they still cheap for milk and its drives people in.
My local booker premier has 2 4pints for 2.50 which is better value than 6pinter in some supermarkets.
Its finding time to shop around.genrally lower priced items only on bottom shelf or harder to find.
Never managed to find tesco 4p curry sauce did look. Our tescos so flipping big and metro just not much range.
household stuff sometimes better looking in poundshop, wilkos or poundstrecher especailly on washing powder.
Hubby got 1percent payrise but think inflation running at 5percent.
its getting harder we buy mostly own brand, homemade, shop around, dont buy much meat.
Petrol rise and now power real killer.
Hope food does not climb too high.
we growing veggies this year I cant wait and strawberry pick at farm as nicer and cheaper.pad by xmas2010 £14,636.65/£20,000::beer:

This is Tesco:
Creamfields milk was £1 2 months ago, then up to £1.15, then £1.50 but noticed today its back to £1.35.
Their standard butter was 98p, now up to £1.100 -
are the price rises in the value stuff a reaction to the advice to "trade down"? More people are now buying the cheaper ranges so the supermarkets hike the prices up?
Thats me being cynical!!0 -
Afternoon all
I have just got back from Te$cos and I am fuming!
A recipe I am making today requires 1 Cooking Apple and 2 Common Tomatoes. So, I check the price on My$upermarket and work out how much money I need to take with me for those and a few other bits that I need - I always try and take as near to the correct money with me when I shop as I can as it prevents impulse buying
Anyway - I get to to Te$cos this morning to find they have no loose common tomatoes or cooking apples. All that was available was a pack of 6 tomatoes for 88p and a bag of 5 cooking apples for £1.37, neither of which I could buy as I didn't have enough money with me  and even if I had, I didn't want 5 cooking apples and 6 tomatoes.......yes, I could find a way to use them up, but that's not the point here.
I made this recipe just over a month ago, and bought my tomatoes and apple from Te$cos then. So what's going on? Are they moving towards a point where we have to buy all fruit and veg as part of a multi-pack?
And to make matters worse, I then had to buy the apple and tomatoes from my local green grocer - 99p for 1 Apple and 2 Tomatoes  Which then meant I didn't have enough money to buy the 8 pints of milk I wanted from Icel@nd, so had to make do with 4.
I often see posts from others on the forum who are on a budget who say they buy their fruit and veg from their local green grocer, but how on earth can people afford to do that?
Ok, sorry, rant overbut what a frustrating 45 minutes
