I've noticed tinned tomatoes have gone up a HUGE amount recently here as well. And tomato puree tins (I can't say I've noticed any difference in tubes, but that's cos I can't remember the price the last time I bought atube). I used to be able to find 3 packs for €1, and singles were about 40c each. Now they are 70c each, and I think I paid €2 for a 3 pack 2 weeks ago.

I am planning on a large storecupboard run "up north" in a few weeks time (sometime in July). I haven't been in a year, and tended to go to Sains in Newry or Lisburn. Would I be better off going elsewhere though this time? I don't mind going to maybe 2 places, but I have limited time to do wandering around (and getting lost :O), and usually get 2 very full trolley loads on such a run - between a serious storecupboard fill up and the perishables for the coming week.

Er, I never thought about it :o

My nanna always put stale cake out, so I do too.

Oh no, I hope I haven't harmed the birds :(
I always presumed they ate the fruit in the cakes not the actual cake. Shortbread is high in sugar I think and of course contains no fruit

OK who amalgamted the value price rise thread with one not idetical and on a boad not many ppl vist. If we MUST have this in food and groceries can wehave it as a value item watch ONLY post otherwise it becomes irrelevant to the OP's intention.

I'm sure this thread will help lots of people and it would be great to see a campaign :T As it's morre about shopping, I'll move it to the Grocery Shopping Board later, once it has been see by more Old Stylers.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.
Fair enough but as the OP intended it to be a thread on Value item watch only can we not have it stuck in with general supermarket comparisions as it goes against the Ops intentions. I for one am interested in value watch as I have recently complained to my Tescos about 10 value items vanishing but would never read general supermarket watch as we only have sainsburys and tescos here and any other supermarkets are irrelevant to me.

Well said Reverbe

The point of this thread was mainly to discuss whether or not Value/Basic/Smart Prices ranges are being phased out across the country, not whether or not the cost of groceries is increasing - we all already know that, what we're concerned about is the possibility of the cheap ranges disappearing, and want people to discuss and check whether this appears to be happening throughout the country - despite my earlier rant ;)

The "new" title of this thread doesn't reflect that at all

are the price rises in the value stuff a reaction to the advice to "trade down"? More people are now buying the cheaper ranges so the supermarkets hike the prices up?

Thats me being cynical!!
I think so. But a lot of us cannot afford the higher price alternatives. So it is a case of value or dont buy.I think they dont make profit on Value rangesso are rising the prices of them to try to make more profit tan they already do - I am looking at YOU Mr Tesco... But like I said when complaining if the Value prices stay low we have more money to spend on other items in the shop. including treats. If you put the value things up or dont sell them we will just either but what we absolutely need and nothing more or don't buy - which is what I a forced to do wth the value thingsthat disappear. I cant afford to buy deodrant for example at 89p when it used to be 48p so will have to show and shop and shop til I can find something affordable.

Youre welcome Hippie- this seems to happen a lot on MSE from what I have seen in passing and has happened to my own threads to the extent where they get no responses and I cannot find my own threads.but thistime it is somethig I am personally interesed in and the thread amalgamation defies the Op's original intentions so utterly clearly.

Well this thread certainly wont get the responses that we were hoping to discuss - how annoying.

So what can we do? Do we go back to the It is tough NOW. So how are we coping thread where we came up with the idea to start a new thread asking everyone if they thought the Basic/Smart Price/Value ranges were being phased out across the country - or do we try and start another thread with something along the lines of Basics/Value/Smart Price - Do You Think The Top 3 Supermarkets Are Phasing Them Out? as a title and hope that it won't get merged?

I'm lost now. I cant find the thread at all unless I get an email notification. Maybe we need to ask a board guide how we can keep it in OS ...? It's so muddly and annoying.
