Did the supermarkets presume that no-one would notice the price rises? I guess a lot of shoppers don't think about what they buy then just gasp when they get the total.

I've noticed that grapes have gone from about £2.50 per kg to nearly £5

1% milk in our Asda is £1.08. Weird regional variations too then.

The other thing I noticed is they had "hidden" smaller packets of basmati rice at the very top of the shelf, way way abouve my field of vision. I normally look down in the supermarket lol.

I haven't been to Tesco much recently, so I had a voucher. £6 off if I spent £40.

I went on Saturday morning, and it was really, really hard to get up to the £40. Not because things were cheap, but because they were expensive, and there was no way I was going to defeat the point of the voucher and buy things for more than they cost in Aldi/Lidl/Sainsburys.

In the end, I topped up by buying 18 litres of value milk, a whole tray of tinned tomatoes and about 10 bags of wholemeal bread flour...

If we all grow tomatoes on our windowsills then we wont need to buy tins :)
  • I completely agree - but if we still keep buying it, the supermarkets will keep increasing their prices. I often buy the value fromage frais, but often the branded versions are on offer and can work out cheaper. I try to be organised and use my Easy-yo yoghurt maker with some cheap blender fresh or frozen fruit for me and the LO but the Muller offer probably works out cheaper per ml just now. Tinned toms... I saw "Cirio smooth passata tetrapack - 3 x 200ml for 49p" on mysupermarket (tesco) and bought loads of them instore - reasonable value I think but now appear to be out of stock.

My strategies at the moment are - Poundland, Aldi, Lidl are my first port of call, after looking at prices on mysupermarket. Then Tesco/Asda for the remainder. Oh, and nag Customer Service in person or by email if they don't have what you want, and tell them that you can always go elsewhere! (Tried this re poppy seeds - couldn't get them anywhere in my town somehow, but now Julian Graves have opened).

Tesco value noodles, were 9p, now 14p.

T value shortbread is now 30p:eek: was 17p (although it was cheaper still a while back). It's a shocker, I used to buy it to feed the birds but £land seed is better value now.
Mr S are still selling theirs for 10p...for now
And their shortbread is 19p. Perhaps you should change to Mr S :D

I will be watching this thread with interest. I was just saying to DH the other day that it seemed like a lot of the prices were higher suddenly when we were doing the weekly shop. I have noticed that it's the basics/value/store brands that are rising in price.

Hey guys its the same here on the other side of the world. I avoid our big 2 chain stores which are Coles and Woolworths (Safeway) like the plague, I shop in the smaller independants (SIMS, IGA ect) they have a better product range and have not cut back on their own brands like the big 2 have. We also have aldi here but I dont find it that much of a saving because you cant do a full shop there. Dont know what its like over there but here I am also sick of the big name brands taking up all of the shelf space im sorry but I dont drink Coke but i will buy the supermarkets own brand cola but they are for ever selling out (not on shelf) due to the fact that Coke takes up almost the whole damn isle ggrrr, I know its all about marketing and who can pay more gets more shelf space but its about time the customer got some say in what we want on the shelves. Also we have gone to the swipe yourself checkouts, which I dont mind (WHEN THEY WORK) but why have the prices still continued to rise, as we now pay for bags or provide our own and also scan our own groceries shouldnt the price fall as less staff are required, ok sorry rant over.
