Am I the only one reading and thinking ' How much!!!'. Good grief, it's not a penny here and there, this is ££'s on the average shop :(

Surely T's, S's, M's etc. will sell less of their own branded food if we can get the branded stuff for the same price?

Shocking that there is up to 80-90% increase on some products - in an ideal world our wages/benefits /pensions would rise in line with prices :) In the real world, its going to be increasingly difficult to live within our means.

There seems to be no reason behind the price hike or why a lot of the Basic/Value stuff has been discontinued... pesronally I am still perplexed why butter etc has shot up 10% . . . is this a political thing I wonder - to put up prices until the new budget and then theywill drop them again?? or is it just profiteering supermarkets keen to increase their margins?? What do you think ??

Hows the shopping list analysis going Jo?

No, you're not, and I think that's one of the points of the thread really. People are also concerned that the Basics/Value/Smart Price ranges are being gradually phased out - what are everyone's thoughts on that?

    $ainsburys I don't ever shop in, so can't comment
A$da don't seem to be phasing out anything that I at least buy, although I have noticed the price of things like Smart Price tomatoes for example, have rocketed!
Te$co certainly seems to have a depleted Value range in the last month or so, and what they do have seems to be more expensive

I've also noticed in the last couple of months that often there seems to be very little difference in cost between Value/Te$co Own Brand and Smart Price/A$da Own Brand on a lot of products.

As well as noticing this, we should do something about it. Did anybody else email Sainsburys ? I got a nice personal reply and an assurance that she "would pass your concerns onto the buying dept". Aye so she will !
But just maybe, if we all did this, somebody might listen? There is no reason for butter to go up! They can't blame "raw materials" can they !
And maybe we should all switch away from Value/SP/Basics and go instead only for brand names which are on offer?? If they think that by doing this, they will make us all trot in there and pay more without so much as a bleat then they got another think coming !!! We have husbands & kids to feed, this is not a game!

Excellent idea mardatha! Could you post a specimen letter that we can cut'n'paste? ..or even start another thread as I think this would be a very popular idea.

I am beginning to think that the supermarkets just think that they can get away with any price increase and no-one will grumble. It will really make them think if they had a barrage of comments / complaints.

Is it beyond the realms of possibility that we could threaten to boycott the big names supermarkets on one specific day or week,,,that might make them pay attention ;)

O god, I forget what I said exactly. It wasn't my idea, it was Primrose who said it on another thread and I've lost it now. I just said that we were on pension credit & we found the Basics range a godsend, & we were sad to see some items disappearing from the shelves etc etc. And could they please keep them otherwise it wouldn't be worth our trailing all the way up to their shop any more :D
Mind a while ago everybody on this forum was moving away from supermarkets and going to Aldi and Lidl....did that fizzle out ? I know they are putting prices up too - but if we all started to shop more widely, in different supermarkets, then the takings of each individual shop will go down...and nothing makes a shop reconsider like a drop in the £££ !:D
EDITED- Primrose gave the link to the "contact us " bit on Sainsburys site. But I think its probably easy enough to find on all the supermarket sites ?

I occasionally but the microwavable ribs in sauce from Tesco, I wait till it's 2 packs for £5, I bought some yesterday & there is now only one pack of ribs in a packet there used to be 2.

Don't forget Sterling has gone down by a lot. Anything imported/transported (diesel etc) is going to go up even more. Which is most stuff as far as I know.

I'm sure this thread will help lots of people and it would be great to see a campaign :T As it's morre about shopping, I'll move it to the Grocery Shopping Board later, once it has been see by more Old Stylers.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies.
