Am I the only one shocked by this? There's no way on earth I'd ever leave DD with people across the road and go out on a jolly, and the idea of leaving the kid in their back garden is despicable.

We have had the same very nice neighbours since buying our house in 1991. Their DS is a year younger than DS1 and DD a couple of years older than DS2. The children have often played together at either house and they frequently move from one to the other in the course of the afternoon. Sometimes that's been an opportunity for NN or us to go out for something without children, or just to get jobs done. Neither of us would ever dream of going out without telling the other, while they have the children. Sometimes we feed each other's kids, but it is never taken for granted and we usually check first that it doesn't interfere with any plans the other family have.
The situation with this little girl really rings alarm bells. I would never leave a child of that age by themselves, and I wouldn't leave a child of any age without access to the house (unless DS1 has forgotten his key). It looks like you'll have to keep a really close eye on things and look up the number for social services, just in case.
Are you planning to approach the mother if she doesn't come to apologise? Maybe tell her that the little girl won't be able to play in future if this ever happens again (and start sending her home at mealtimes). I know this sounds heartless and it's not the girl's fault, but the mother needs to realise that what she is doing is not acceptable. This one has really got me going - sorry if I joined in with the rant.

There is nothing 'spoiling' about feeding a child at meal times. Not having had lunch at 2.30 is not on, especially if the mother is out!

Anyway an update - my mother has just been moved to intensive care, due to her blood pressure dropping through the floor. I am waiting for the doctor to call me to tell me just how serious things are and then if possible I will be driving to Sussex tomorrow (she is 300 miles away!) rather than waiting till Monday.

Not quite sure what to do about my client on Monday, but Im considering asking another person i know who does the same kind of work as me, to go in my place. The hearing shouldnt be that complicated as long as they stick to the script - and that is something I have worked out already.

    Boo!

Big hugs Sexym - the head sounds like an awful boss!

Mumof2 - what a nightmare with the poor 7 year old! Well done you for keeping an eye out. And actually, you can enforce table manners when she's eating at yours. Just say that, in this house we eat like this... and show her. I would tend to agree with the others that have talked about Social Services. She's too young to be let out if there's no-one home to take her back should her welcome be outstayed.

Mudders - my lovely - how nice to see you back!

Benw - vibes for your Mum

Jo - glad Mum and sis are home safe

I haven't particularly flown today but I have been shopping for food and battened down the hatches for the weather we appear to be in for tomorrow.

    But, best of all

I seem to remember one of our long standing members introduced a rule that to join you had to clean someone elses house. It must be my turn to be on the receiving end!
