what an absolute load of total rubbish this post is.
Whoever told you that must have been laughing behind their hand
thinking that you were so naive to believe such tosh.

Sorry if you don't like the science. As a smoker, I'd prefer not to believe it also, but facts are facts.

If a smoker breathes into a clean white handkerchief an hour after they've had a cigarette a brown deposit will be left on it. That's what they will constantly be breathing out when they are near a baby.

Errata, that's not true I'm afraid. Did you read that or did somebody tell you?

Sorry to those who don't believe me. Try it, and you'll see it happens.
For those who don't believe a smoker breathes rubbish over a baby if they're close enough to it - google the breath test for smokers. The monitor used only measures the carbon monoxide smokers breathe out, but that's all it needs to do to test if a patient has given up of if they're being untruthful.

show me the bit in the science books where you have actually seen that written down by a scientist.

I agree that we are breating out rubbish for some while but the white cloth bit after an hour ...... no, silly............

I do believe the toxins that you breath out can be there for X amount of time after your last cigarette, but I don't believe that a brown deposit will be left on a handkerchief just by breathing on it.

So a parent wants to do something for their child and everyone jumps down their throat for it?

Yes, a baby will be exposed to all sorts that is just as/almost as/worse than a smoking gran with fag reek on her breath, so what? Some things you can avoid, some things are harder to avoid.

Should we all just say 'oh don't bother cos you know, they will at some point be exposed to worse so whatever'?

Many parents give up sterilising at 6 months, some earlier, some later. Me, I still sterilise and will do till 1 year. Whats the point, she will crawl about and stick things in her mouth anyway. The point is, it will make me feel better to know that at least her bottles and cups are germ-free.

But I also put powdered baby milk into cooled water which others wouldn't agree with.

The thing is, my babies, my rules.

I'm also wondering if DH could go a whole hour in-between cigarettes so I can get him to breath onto a handkerchief.

  • I told my MIL when I first became pregnant that she would not be allowed to babysit the baby if she was smoking.
she saw it as a great incentive to give up.
D.S is nearly 4 and she is still a non smoker.

As others have said its your baby so you set the rules,go with what you feel.

er - I smoke and just went outside for a ciggy - came back in and breathed into a tissue - nothing on it, I took it into hubby and asked him to smell it (hes a non-smoker, hates ciggy smoke) and he looked puzzled ..........I asked him what he could smell ............again faintly puzzled (he obviously thought it was a test of some kind i had dreamed up to torment him) then said ....well i can smell ciggys but its faint.
so this time i am going out for a ciggy and while i am smoking it after every puff, and exhalation, i am going to breathe into tissue - to see if it discolours.

    ok result of experiment no2
the tissue didnt discolour at all. and i actually blew the smoke through on last puff!
smelt a bit more strongly of cigs according to OH - but i did blow smoke through it!
so where did this 'information' come from? the government? the anti-smoking lobby?
they really should be careful about spreading mis-information, this could backfire on them. Its ok to give warnings about smoking, I agree its not healthy and I would give up but find it almost impossible right now. but its not right to scare people with lies and mis-information.
jemw - I have never smoked around my kids and grandkids - always went outside and washed my hands after. I am currently childminding my two year old grandson - but I draw the line at having to shower, change clothes and brush my teeth before he can come near me. that would make me suggest they pay a childminder and make them sign they are non-smoking. my civil liberty is to choose to smoke if i wish. I take sensible precautions when handling babies and children, like washing my hands or at least using a wetwipe. I will not however, be dictated to.
your MIL sounds like a woman who tried to do the right thing and her baby died anyway, perhaps she mistrusts medical advice?
I hope you can resolve this amicably, hun.
