There are different triggers for asthma. Cigarette smoke is just one of them, so this child may well have been exposed to other irritants.0

she disinfects her daughter?
I guess what Im trying to say is you can take it too far, there are worthwhile measures you should take to protect young children but too much of it and the child or no one around them have a normal life.:happylove DD July 2011:happyloveAug 13 [STRIKE]£4235.19[/STRIKE] £2550.00 :cool:0 -
Poor woman sounds like she has OCDI must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -

Ex smokers are always the worst complainers George
well that would have been pointless, how i could i (as the smoker) expect to get them clean and dry before they got the smell in them again?
if anyone felt the need to wash gifts i had given them then they did it without a word, but then again im that disorganised any presents i buy dont sit around long enough to get dirty.... :rotfl:
i didnt say that i complained or made any kind of fuss... i simply said i wash everything that comes from the smokers as i didnt see it as being fit to be given to a child,
i only mentioned it to my dad that time as the bear didnt seem wash friendly and i didnt want it ruined.
the only thing i complain about is the fact that i am an ex smoker... id be a much happier person with a cigarette in my hand0 -
I have never smoked, OH did smoke but gave up (he was never allowed to smoke in the house anyway) but both of our mothers do and OH nan. When I was pregnant I put the wheels in motion and started saying it politely, then I sent emails with articles saying the dangers of 2nd and 3rd hand smoke. Everyone was clear that when the baby came along there would be no smoking then handling the baby.
I have made them smoke outside, then when they get in they have to change their top and wash hands and no kissing baby with smokey breath (sounds harsh but its my baby and I don't smoke so why would I allow it around by baby from others). My son is now 9 months old and I can luckily say although fuss was made in the beginning everyone has stuck to this.
You've gotta stand your ground.0 -
right we are now clear - no smokers near babies unless they had their last ciggy at least 30 minutes previously.
they are showered, changed, have brushed teeth and preferably been disinfected with anti bac.
then we can take the babies out shopping down the high street with all those lovely diesel fumes, petrol fumes, not to mention all those people with god knows how many diseases leaning into their prams and breathing all over them, or even sneezing or coughing in the vicinity of the pram.
I have a better idea - DO NOT let the child out of the house until it starts school or anyone else in! install a shower in the porch! mail must be nuked in microwave to ensure no bugs! do you realise how paranoid you all sound???0 -

No one on here is going on about the need to completely disinfect the child and it's surroundings. Many examples have beenn given as extreme case but that's about it.
What we have is a soon to be mum who has genuine concerns for the welfare of her child around cigarette fumes. I totally support her. I don't insist on everything being completely germ free around my children but I DO insist on people not smoking in front of them or around them.
At least if a mother worries it shows she cares and only wants the best for her child. We can't stop cars going past when we are out with the baby in a pushchair and we can't help standing behind big Noreen in a queue when she starts coughing her guts up, but what we CAN help, is smokers who we know who come into contact with our babies!
Why dismiss it when we can prevent it?
Why would I want my Dad to come in, have a fag out the back, then come straight in and start blowing raspberries on the babies face and neck, when instead, I can ask him to wait 20 mins, wash his hands and pop a mint in his mouth!!
If there is anyone who would have told me to bog off, it would have been my Dad, but he understood totally as he knows what a filthy habit it is and he wouldn't want to inflict it on the baby in any way.
Smoking stinks ~ fact.
I should know ~ I smoke tooTank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
as I said before - I am a smoker and i take REASONABLE measures around my grandkids! then their parents take them into town etc! but some of the measures spoken about on here - the thirty minute rule - the quoting of spurious experiments - reminds me of the famous recluse Howard Hughes (and if you dont know who i mean look him up on internet).
Its OTT!!! You cannot keep kids in a virus free bug free zone......it isnt healthy for them! and it really annoys me that parents go schizoid over thirdhand smoke and then take the kids into town, feed them macdonalds, haribos etc all the while congratulating themselves they are great parents!!
So yeah I wound you up a bit - I survived parents who smoked around me - so did my OH! I didnt smoke around my kids, oh and shock horror - I taught them to make mud pies... and let them taste them!!! will remind you all that new research is coming out that the use of anti-bacs in the home is counter productive - kids dont develop immune systems if the home is TOO clean!!!0 -
