can i ask a few silly questions?
i noticed someone on the last page (sorry cant remember the name) saying they may be a bit late in garic planting ... i still have to plant mine am i too late? Not too sure - id suggest keeping it till the autumn and planting then to be sure. If you want to try it put it in and fingers crossed it will grow as it should
the reason i am not attempting carrots is carrot fly ...but ...was just wondering ... can i grow it on a verandahh in a pot? would that be ok? and am i too late for that now? Yeah you can grow in a pot - yo would need a fairly large one to get a decent crop. Have you looked at getting enviromesh? You put it over your crops.0 -
I was looking at that over the weekend. Is it stable? Or do I have to weigh it down to avoid it toppling over? £12 is good value just for the staging as I need a bit of space to harden stuff during the day (and to prevent squirrels, birds, cats from eating everything!)0

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago and also the cover for it. I haven't put it up yet, going to do that over Easter, but I've been told that they can get blown around if it's windy so I was going to put a grow bag on the bottom shelf with some bush tomatoes in them and maybe also attach it to the house by drilling in some hooks to the brickwork and then fixing it with some wire. They certainly are good value IMHO.
What really hacks me off is that when I moved here there was a greenhouse, but that was in the days when I had more money than sense and had it pulled down  --> at myself!!0 -

I was told by my neighbour a few days ago (and I don't know if it's true or not) that carrot fly cannot fly/jump more than a metre high so it's worth sowing them in high containers. As I said I don't know if it's true but I'm going to sow mine in an old recycling box placed on a layer or two of bricks.0 -

Was just thinking the same myself. Have got lettuce and tomato seedlings indoors, but planted radishes and spring onions in pots outside.Haven't got any fleece so will just have to cover with plastic. If weather is really cold could it stop the seeds from germinating or will they just wait until weather warms up?0 -
Dare I say it here in London seems OK. Thursday night seems the coldest on BBC forecast at 1c. Lots of wet weather though, seems it will rain for the full week. Have been harvesting as much rainwater as poss but running out of buckets and pots to collect in!
Im starting to worry about the tenders now, the tomatoes really need to be repotted from the mini pots I have done them in but their seed leaves arnt out yet properly. Also the patty pans definitely need to be re-potted, they are getting somewhat leggy! Im not sure what I'm going to finish them in but I guess it will have to be done today
Glad to see some new faces
:hello: to ElantanSeems your OH might be a bit strange- is it the soil he has a problem with? There are things you can grow on cotton wool inside- eg cress, microgreens.
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -

The seeds and the water around them in the ground can freeze and rot the seeds thats the problem.
Spring onions should be fine I woud have thought as they can go out from feb and are strictly to be done in the ground.. Can you move the pots indoors or in a shed just in case? Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? I wouldl have thought spring onions will be OK as you can plant them in October (as we did) and they stay in ground overwinter. We pulled one up yetserday and it's fine if a little small.
Off to buy fleece today for my spuds and carrots. The peas and salad leaves are outside but under the plastic cold frame so I hope they will be OK. Everything else is inside (bar the strawberrys which I potted outside on saturday).
Speaking of which how long should jalopeno seeds take to come through? Mine have been on the windowsill for a week now with no sign of anything sprouting through.0
