Speaking of which how long should jalopeno seeds take to come through? Mine have been on the windowsill for a week now with no sign of anything sprouting through.
Don't give up until it's been at least 4 weeks. A windowsill is still to cold, they need constant min of 18-20C to germinate (well, that's what I was told for chillies)0 -
Argh! Snow was forecast for us next week over the weekend but now the forecast is just sleet and a bit chilly - but not down to freezing as such. Probably need to find something to cover up my carrots with and will put the cloches back on the onions. Annoyingly my peas are ready to go in the ground - the roots are starting to come out the bottom of the pots but don't want to do it until after the cold spell has passed.0

Just been out in the garden to put fleece over my carrot container and to put bubble wrap over my containers of potatoes. Being new to veg growing and gadening in general, I can see that there is a whole new kind of frustration to deal with....not being able to plant out etc. Still, better weather is hopefully on the horizon, though the weather forecasts tell us different!Grocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

Even though I have nothing growing outside as yet and a windowsill full of muck waiting to flourish it's contents, I was still annoyed to hear we've heavy snow and lows of -1 on Wednesday.
I'm so into the growing frame of mind I want spring so badly!
Can I ask a question... strawberries - they dangle along the floor dont they? I have a bracket on the wall for a hanging basket, would it be a good idea to put strawberries in there?0 -

It would be a very good idea, from everything I've read about growing strawbs.

Growing strawbs in hanging baskets
This is what I've done, seems to work well0 -
I love the idea of hanging baskets for strawberries, and thanks for the link.
In the past, we have used guttering for strawberries which works great when put up in a greenhouse, but you have to remember to completely replace the soil and plant up fresh every year.0 -
Our strawberries in the greenhouse came down with whitefly about a week ago, so had to put them outside
. Fingers crossed it hasn't spread to anything else so far.

Wow, I go off here last night and I've got two pages to catch up with this afternoon!!
It is GREAT that so many people are trying to grow their own for the first time. And even better that we can all share the experience together on here!
A BIG welcome to all the newbies::D
beingfrugal, (good luck with the growing – 8 things is taking it slowly?!? Lol). :rotfl:
Vampiric Addiction (I like the name and the “floating around” at the end of your message!!!).
elantan ( I can sympathise – my hubby hates plants around the house too – but he doesn’t moan so much when he’s eating the stuff I’ve grown!):rotfl: Don’t panic about starting things off, spring is late this year so what the seed packs say, you can about add a month and a half to the sowing times! Trees should be fine, they are generally only sent if it is okay to plant them out. You can plant the garlic now - before the snow would be good. You will just get smaller bulbs as a result....Give it a go and let us know how you get on! http://www.garlicworld.co.uk/grower/page3.html this site did a comparison on spring and Autumn sowing.... have a look! The spring ones did better than the Autumn for quality!!

p.s:
Misskool I have had one of the 4 tiered wilkos gh’s since last spring and I just have a few bricks resting on the bottom poles, which seems to do the job! Take the cover off at the end of the season though or they shred! (Mine did this year apparently because of the uv rays!).2009 - Attempting to grow my own Kitchen garden.....did it!!!
2010 - Attempting to make my garden a beautiful place for dd2 to enjoy!0 -
have a looooad of herb seeds packets.. was going to direct sow when it gets a bit warmer, but got a load of mini pots from poundland at the weekend, so have started some off on window sill.. I have
mint
flat leaved parsley
curly parsley
chives
sage
thyme
coriander
oh and a planted two french beans (from dig in free) and a sunflower (I loves sunflowers!!)
So my window sill is really full.. I'm just getting addicted to seeing the little seedlings pop through.. lol..0
