  • I can't seem to get pics to show on here

Nor can I find the card reader so that I can put new pics on my grow your own food on a budget blog instead. I'm so disappointed!

    Things to share this week-

    Chilli trial

I sowed chilli seed from a packet and seed from a shop bought chilli. The shop chilli germinated slightly faster and better than the seed packet one. There wasn't much difference in it.

The 1st early Rocket spuds in containers

I am still bringing them back into an unheated room overnight. I'm just starting to liquid feed them now because they have been in the compost for six weeks and will have used all the nutrients up.

The ones chitting on the cold windowsill had sprouts which went black but the ones set t the same time on a warmer windowsill are in better shape. The black ones I planted a week ago in a container are just showing green leaves. The outdoor container ones I planted deeper aren't showing. I'll be covering them with polystyrene packing sheet at night if the weather turns colder here again.

(I'm due to plant the rest of the spuds out in the open ground at Easter with luck)

    Pests

The slugs are late out and about due to it being so cold but I'm seeing a few now hiding under wood and debris during the day.

    Happy sowing and planting everyone!

you can plant it in if you can get to your patch. I have heavy clay soil so it's very difficult to plant anything after it's been raining.

I'm not putting potatoes in until next weekend or the one after next. Frost is forecast for some parts of the country over the next week so be aware of it where you are

Took your advice and have decided to wait until some point in the week after easter depending ( of course) on the temperatures....
    Thank you....

  • Yeah very cross now. My spuds went in the other day and now snow is forecast :( strawberrys also in the hanging baskets. Fed up now.

Tomatoes are huge and am sure will end up going in bin if i cant get em out soon.

Losing my enthusiasm now the weather is CRAP again.

Although it's been lovely today really sunny and nice.

shevis: if the potatoes have already grown green tops, earth up and cover them with fleece. Strawberries will be fine, mine have been in snow the whole winter, apparently they fruit better after a frost?

I'm feeling the same about my tomatoes too :(
  • Thanks. Am going to town tomorrow to look for some fleece in the pound shop.

Am also uber grumpy as am going to Blackpool for Easter weekend. It's going to be freezing.

Oh and I put my lettiuce and peas out under the cold frame so no doubt they will be dead as dodos.

I decided that since i can't plant anything much outside, i'd start start sowing my cape gooseberrys, aubergine and celery and strawberries. My courgettes are beginning to get a bit lanky and it's a shame they won't be able to go out for another couple of weeks...they might end up on the compost heap at this rate. My toms are very slow to grow though, so hopefully, bu the time the frost and snow has cleared (not that we have it yet here) they should be just about ready to get put in the garden.

Just read the long range weather by metcheck and they are forecasting snow here (Bolton) on Monday and tuesday. So please beware putting out anything that will shrivel in the cold

    Thanks for the heads-up.

I wonder if it's real snow, or geo engineered snow, like in China?

Hi. We've managed to get a share on an allotment for free but we're a bit behind as have only just managed to tidy our bit and get it dug over.
Haven't got a clue what we're doing but hoping to have two raised beds.
Can anyone give me any advice on what plants work well together because I've been told potatoes can't be planted in the same soil two years on the trot and I'm now a bit worried about planting arrangements for the first year.

Also I've just put a pear and apple tree (more freebies) outside in pots, with the upcoming weather is it worth bringing them back indoors?

    Any help greatly received

    Thank You

  • I'm keeping all my stuff (all in pots) in until the forecast cold spell has lifted, what with snow forecast!! I want to make a start on a brick built raised bed that was here when I moved in. Just putting flowers in that though - all veggies are in containers as I'm a newb and also don't have too much space, a lot of the garden is slabs and gravel on top of the slabs, but I only moved in last late year so hoping to see if I can get the slabs up :)
