Its been so long since I posted, im so glad everyone is doing so well with growing our own. I am doing ok with mine, a few failures, chillies for the most part gave up. I have got some replacements from ebay which seem to be doing pretty well.
My strawberrys are doing brilliantly, so far there is just over 100 fruits growing and lots more flowers coming through. I am over-run with pumpkin and squash plants, they are each in morrisons buckets now, I will only have room to plant half out into the garden. Tomatoes are growing well, some in morrisons buckets, and one lot in a hanging basket!
Lots of other things going on, ill try getting some pictures up this week.DFW NERD NO.656 DEBT FREE 24TH NOVEMBER 2010 TOTAL DEBT AUGUST 2007 £39000MFiT T2 NO.56 WE OWN [STRIKE]25%[/STRIKE] 31.5% OF OUR HOUSE SO FAR!0 -
Beans are very prone to rotting. I have to slap myself and not water them.
Sow them into damp compost, cover and leave them.
I rotted loads by watering them every day. It's taken a lot of beans for me to get it :rotfl:
So does that mean that I shouldn't really be watering them (they're outside now) - or do I just water once/twice a week?
They're next to my courgettes and I think somebody said that courgettes need a lot of water. I'll just have to be careful and try not to wave the watering can around too gleefully!0 -
I'm looking at growing my own too but I don't have a lot of space, just a smallish balcony. I was looking at getting a raised container for it like this http://www.mygreenerhome.co.uk/garden-60/vegetable-beds-64/haxnicks-patio-and-balcony-raised-bed-520.html. It looks pretty reasonable - any thoughts from the more experienced out there?0

I've seen those for £5 in B&M Bargains and they look fine. Give it a go - you can go wrong with this if you want to grow some herbs and lettuce - nothing too big of course!0

That's for sowing.
If you're planting in the ground, I wait until they are wilted before I water. They get a drenching when being transplanted and then nothing unless it's drought. If in containers, I check how damp the compost is. stick a finger in.0 -

If you've never been to home bargains then this is the store locator (at the bottom of the page).

Thanks for the info - unfortunately there don't appear to be any stores within a 25 mile area. I will try B&Q.0 -
It's a bit chilly here this afternoon brrrr...so i haven't spent long in the garden. DD helped me to move a pot with rhubarb seedlings in it and also the 2 pots with first earlies in them...which should be ready soon...i can just see that flowers are beginning to form on the foliage.
I sowed some french beans and loosely tied my snap peas to garden canes to try to encourage them to grow up them, potted on some pepper seedlings and thats about it.
Oh tell a lie, i bought 2 x b and q bargains; a 50p golden thyme plant nearly dead and a 10p lavender plant dead but with on little purple bud still on it. I potted these up and gave them a feed and watered them. Hopefully they can be nursed back to health!Grocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

I'm celebrating as when I got home from work I went into the garden and the first flower has just started to unfurl on my peas :j0

OK, you don’t want a multipurpose for that lot. They’re all basically types of fruit so you need something good for fruit & flowers such as tomato food. Don’t use a multipurpose like growmore or you will get lots of leaves and not much else. Beans & peas especially don’t need feeding since their roots can fix nitrogen.
Container-grown plants don’t need feeding until a few weeks after they’ve reached their biggest pots.
Out in the open ground shouldn’t need feeding if you have worked in plenty of organic matter into the area before planting.
I bought a fruit and vegetable specific feed in the end from B and Q and resisted urge to buy more plants. It's all containers mine is, cheers for the adviceAhhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!0 -
my baby leeks have all flopped, including many leaves on some radishes....is this due to weather changes?0
