I'm confused by the pinching out the flowers too, because I'm sure I read a few pages back that others were pinching out the flowers? Because of that I pinched out the flowers from 3 of my 4 plants. I do hope more will form now. Why would others have suggested doing it? I've never done it before, and usually leave them to grow doing their own thing.

Advice or thoughts anyone to the conflicting advice?

You need to pinch out the side shoots. These are not the flowers. If you look at your plant it will have a thick central trunk, and off this the side branches (sorry about the tree analogy, but it helps explain.) Where the branch meet the trunk, you will see another 'branch' sprouting, and if left it will form just that, another branch, it is these you need to pinch out. If you are unsure if it is a branch or a flower truss, leave it until it gets to say 1cm and then you will be certain.

I also pulled off the first lot of flowers off my tomato tumbler :( but now have more luckily, it's tough wondering what to do for the best sometimes. So much for tumbling....will know not to put it in a shallow hanging basket again!!

  • Weathermen! The 5 day report looked good yesterday, sure a little overcast but decent enough temperatures, and I moved my tomatoes outside and staked them (can't fit them back in the greenhouse now). Guess what - it's cold now lol

My blackcurrents are still turning black but splitting any ideas please ???

Hi hun, I think this could be due to infrequent watering earlier in the year (it would have been difficult to get it right with the weird weather). Don't think there's much you can do now except to keep watering (but not too much!).

megansmum – depends on the weather, but if it’s still cold at night with you then bring them in at night. One cold night and they’ll be goners.

Also, I remembered reading your stuff about your peas, they don’t like to be touched (Nan was always warning me “don’t touch the hams” when picking them when I was young). That could be why they’re not climbing.

Thanks guys. I've never pinched the flowers out before, I'm I'm sure it was mentioned on here a week or two ago, so that's what I did. I knew about pinching the leaves and side shoots, I've always done that before. Hey ho, they'll grow some more.

Heynonny - I put my tumbler tomato in a normal hanging basket, and am concerned it doesn't appear to do any tumbling whatsoever. It just grows upright like a normal plant, such as Gardeners' Delight. Does it bend over eventually do you think, perhaps under the weight of the fruit?

Any advice also about when is best to feed the tomato plants?
One day the clocks will stop, and time won't mean a thing

The 'Tumbler' tomato sarymclary I put in a shallow round 30cm basket - firked around a bit and it was completely root bound - took it up and the whole circle of soil came up with it, then I noticed on the label I got with it something about pinching out once 120cm tall....1.2 METRES TALL?!! I thought it would nicely splay over the sides of the hanging basket but no I think it's going to be way too big for a hanging basket. Glad I only put one plant in there now was going put 3 or 4 in one basket!! It's a really beefy thing now only had it a month or so. Pulled off flowers and side leaves and all sorts too. Going leave it well alone now. I thought that but then I thought that may make the stems break so not sure how it tumbles exactly! How tall is your tumbler tom?

I read Gardeners Delight were ideal for hanging baskets hence I've grown about 7, but not so sure now, just going put one per morrisons bucket and see how they go.

No idea about feeding I'm hoping someone will be able to point us in the right direction for that!

Hi, I have been trying to grow my own for a wee while, and don't really know what I am doing :D

I am potting up a chilli plant - and wondered - do i pot it up right up to the seed leaves (like yuo do with tomato plants?) ? Any help appreciated thanks. The plants were sent in the post and are only recovering now and are a bit weary :)
