Phew, what a hot weekend that was. A couple of disasters to report. After all my warnings about watering courgettes in pots, mine got scorched when I didn't water them early enough on Saturday. They now have crinkly brown edges on the leaves and a couyple of leaves were so bad I took them off.

The two pots of french beans I put out have had all the lower leaves stripped off by the hens. Lucky they were tall enough, or there'd be nothing left at all!

Hens also managed to reach some of the rocket when we left the greenhouse door slightly open for a bit of air in the hot weather.

Good news is hubby has nearly finished the 3rd raised bed, so I have to decide what to put out. Think I'll have to abandon this lot of spinach and chuck the courgettes out into it!

Hope everyone has been enjoying the good weather - actually managed to get a couple of hours on a recliner with a good book yesterday :)

i hope temps do drop a bit lowr, worryingly lots of my stuff is geting frazzled  including my courgette which is outside, I have to try and move it somewhere else a bit more shaded but the roof is v exposed nad my hand is such I cant really lift

drape a net curtain around it. (or drape anything really to protect them a bit)

I've pegged my fleece on the outside of the greenhouse to shade them a bit

    Hi everyone,

    Here is my little update:

Potatoes - all at top of flexitubs and awaiting flowers.:)

Strawberrys - all got plenty of flowers: look to be my biggest success this year! :j

Onions - plenty of long green shoots, hoping they're growing big underneath!!:o

Tomatoes - 3 plants survived, small but alive!!! :T

Cucumbers - all died :( tempted to sow more if not too late?? Advice please?

Sweetcorn - all germinated and growing daily.

Kiwi - looked dead right up until this week: now got tiny green leaves! :j

brussels - just about surviving but not getting any bigger! :(

peas - growing, but don't seem towant to clinb the trellis, just laying limply! :(

apple, cherry, pear and plum trees all young and no fruit but nice green leaves! :rotfl:

I think that's about it....every time i go to write that, i think of something else..... any advice re cucumbers, peas and brussels would be greatly appreciated..:D

Great to hear how well everyone is doing. Katholicos - i'm soooo jealous of your garden!! Well done!!

    Happy growing everyone!!:D

ARGH I've just discovered my first tiny hard green raspberry on my wilko cane woop!!! :D:D

Had a poke around in my tomato in a hanging basket....far too small to support the tomato plant, it was really rootbound even though it's young so put it in a M bucket instead.

Repotted most courgettes into their final pot and made sure they were well put in and firm. Hoping for at least 3 healthy plants.

My sweet pepper plant is getting really big as is the sweetcorn plants - they will be in for a shock when the weather cools down!!
Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!
  • Hi, can I just ask howbig your final pot for your courgettes is? I've got mine in morrisons buckets but was wondering if should go bigger??

Well I have put a couple of the plants in the M buckets, a couple in 36cm pots and a couple in 30cm pots whatever I had to hand really. See how it goes, I've never done anything like this before so it's a learning curve! Have had to move them into the shade too, don't think the constant scorching sunlight is doing them much good.

I'm growing 6 peas and all bar one took flight in their final tubs straight away. 1 however didn't really do anything for about 3 weeks other than grow a bit. It now climbing and catching up to the others, which are flowering. So maybe just give them a bit more time. Has it been long since you repotted / moved them?

megansmum - cucumbers like really good weather. They hate the cold. This is the perfect time to start them off, but you really need to keep them indoors all summer. I haven't much of a clue with peas & brussels though, just potted my peas into troughs with canes in a sort of tent and am hoping for the best!

helen - for courgettes aim to have them in the biggest pots you can get, they need LOADS of water

P.S. forgot to say, I was wondering what to do with all the rocket. Even though we eat loads of salads, this good weather has brought everything on a lot faster than was expected, so I made a batch of rocket pesto from a recipe I found, and it's gorgeous! Going to have some with pasta & a BIG salad for tea tonight :)
