Im convinced there should be like 3 different prices, in bands according to distance. You know like some delivery charges for places like Garden centres.

Our venue is also no more than 5 minutes walk from the reg office. However to come to your venue means two regs are in attendance and are there for (I think) about 2 hours. Whereas in the reg office they are able to do a wedding every half hour. So although its costing us nearly £400 for them to come to us, we have the luxury of doing it all at our own pace.

I have a question please! I know in England you have to get married in a fixed and licensed place don't you? Would a registra consider doing it twice IYSWIM. One inside in the right place legally and one outside? What are the chances? I really want to get married outside, but it is going to be almost impossible!

    Thanks!

There is a venue called Matara - https://www.matara.co.uk which is down near Tetbury, this is the only venue I know that has a kind of outdoor space to get married in. They have an outside loggia which is open to the elements on one side and you get married under that but can step outside onto a little bridge over some water. I havent known a registrar who would be willing to marry you twice - why not have a registrar for the proper bit and then a humanist minister who may do a bit of handfasting out in the open.

You can get married outdoors in some countries but not the UK.

We went to look at a venue in Solihull, West Midlands that has an island in the middle of their lake where you can get married. The ceremony is in the Summer House, but you cant really get closer to actually being outside and it was beautiful. Sadly it was also very expensive.

    Link, if anyone is interested...

yes....its quite normal to hear someone clearing their throat at 'that' moment, followed by a stifled giggle!

    Enjoy your planning x

If anyone does that at our wedding they will pay! I really don't think my nerves will be able to cope with that sort of 'joke'!

I think thats why the occasional registrar takes on the role of the 'bossy school mistress type' (to quote Dr_DiNg_DoNg!), as they can see how nervous the bride/groom are.

Most, however, are very lovely helpful types, and are more than happy to help if you have any worries or concerns. (I did a themed wedding once -along the lines of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. The bride was of course Maid Marion and all the guests were dressed in tunics & green tights, as woodland fairies or in medieval gowns! Not my personal taste, but they all had a wonderful time....but I did feel sorry for the two grandfathers in their tights!)

    H :o
Women marry men hoping they will change, men marry women hoping they won't! Inevitably they will both be disappointed.

    Not a question , but a suggestion.

Dont become the bossy school mistress type, always remember its the couples day and you are there to provide a service, for which you are being paid.

I have to say that is actually quite rude! None of the registrars I work with are bossy at all. We just want the ceremony to go well for the couple. They need to know we know what we are doing as they are usually very nervous and to have someone who is calm and authorative around is good for most nervous brides and grooms.

Yes we are being paid to do it but it dosen't make us bossy and we honestly have the couples best intrests at heart!

Unfortuantly its not allowed to be missed out but it is very rare for an objection to take place. As already mentioned if it did happen one of the registrars would take the objector to one side and find out why they object. It does have to be a legal objection though, already married, being forced in to it etc. Just because bob loves the bride more than the groom is not an objection!

Please don't worry, if you know there are no legal objections you will be fine and by giving notice any possible problems will have been dealt with.

Out of interest why am I having to pay an extra £200 (ish) to get married outside of the registry office? My venue is literally the other side of the road (so 50 yards maximum) from the registry office. My registrar said it was to cover transport costs. Pah, what cost?!

As already mentioned, it is to cover the cost of 2 registrars to be out of the office for a period of time, even if it is over the road they still have to be there for longer before hand and afterwards as well than if they were in their own office.

Also we have no say in what fee is charged, the council sets these fees for us.
