Hi all,

I am a Registrar of Births and Deaths but will be doing marriages and civil partnerships from May onwards.

If anyone had any questions i will do my best to answer them! Although things do differ depending on the county your in! Oh and Scotland is classed as a differnt country for registration purposes so can't help with weddings there but England or Wales i can!

One of my friends asked what I'd do if someone stood up and objected when asked in the ceremony and I've been having panic attacks about it ever since!

There is no possible legal objection to the marriage, I've just become thoroughly paranoid about jokers now. What would the registrar do? And is it possible to skip the "does anyone object" moment completely?

Hi Sarah,
As an ex-registrar, the chances of this happening are exceptionally rare, and usually only happen in extreme cases with a valid reason.
Please do not worry unduly, IF it does happen (and I mean a HUGE if), the registrar will usually take the objector to one side to find out what the problem is, then act accordingly.
Dont forget, you give 'notice' of marriage beforehand which basically means you're stating there is no legal reason why you should not be married, you will have produced documents in support of this (decree absolute / death certs etc etc), and signed a legal declaration.
If you have any worries about a particular guest who you think might have reason to object (for whatever reason), then I'd bring this to the attention of the registrar prior to the ceremony.
Dont forget this is very rare...my superintendent registrar only ever had one instance in her 16 years, and even then the couple still got married in the end!

A group of our friends at my first wedding, decided to shuffle their feet just at that moment, (as though they were standing up) and our Reg told them off (nicely of course)

Thanks guys - it's just one of those daft ideas I've fixated on as I know I'd die of embarrassment if anyone stood up for a laugh!

yes....its quite normal to hear someone clearing their throat at 'that' moment, followed by a stifled giggle!

I have a question please! I know in England you have to get married in a fixed and licensed place don't you? Would a registra consider doing it twice IYSWIM. One inside in the right place legally and one outside? What are the chances? I really want to get married outside, but it is going to be almost impossible!

Out of interest why am I having to pay an extra £200 (ish) to get married outside of the registry office? My venue is literally the other side of the road (so 50 yards maximum) from the registry office. My registrar said it was to cover transport costs. Pah, what cost?!

Dont become the bossy school mistress type, always remember its the couples day and you are there to provide a service, for which you are being paid.

I think it would be unfair to charge anything other than a flat rate for weddings outside the register office. However, quite how they work out that it costs anywhere near £200 for transport is beyond me!
