long slow cooking it is -
if you haven't got a slow cooker (or if the leg is just tooooo huge!) you could braise in the oven on a low heat in a covered (or foil covered) roasting dish
if you haven't got a big enough roasting dish, you could simply rub some butter/oil with salt and pepper and slow cook on a baking tray in the oven if you wrap it well in foil.
if none of that can be done, you could cut the bone out, chop meat into chunks, brown off and casserole on the hob with whatever you have for flavouring. (if you are strong enough to cut the bone this would add great flavouring too)

I'm with Mrs E - I do this at Christmas with the legs, so the legs can be put in before the crown. Turkey leg is also very nice braised in red wine/stock with onions and celery or whatever you have for flavour.

I don't eat turkey leg any other way, but I love it like this.

I buy a boned & rolled breast at xmas, but I've been tempted to buy a leg or two just to bone, stuff & roll it:D
  • We were given a hamper yesterday from our friends as a Christmas gift.

With the hamper came a rather large turkey.

I have just split (in a fashion) the legs and wingy bits from the crown (i've never cooked turkey before as mum has always had us over)

I know We will cook the crown in the oven - I have put this in the freezer for later use however the legs and the wings I have plans for.

I was thinking of making a turkey type soup in the slow cooker however, can I put it raw in the slow cooker or does it need to go in the oven first?

I know chicken goes raw in the slow cooker but not sure about turkey and food safety.

Any help/advice recipes would be most helpful
    Thanks
It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice

Yes you can put it in the slow cooker, treat turkey with the same caution you would chicken, if its a good size turkey I think you could probably get a casserole out of the legs and wings as well as some soup!

    Hi nuttyrockeress,

I treat turkey in exactly the same way as I do chicken. It will be fine to put into the slow cooker raw, just make sure that the juices are running clear before you serve it.

    This thread may help:

I'll add your thread to the slow cooker quick questions thread later.

  • I cooked one of these in the slow cooker today and was very happy with it, there was lots of meat on it and as it was so cheap I will def be buying again. The meat came away from the bone really nicely and I made it into a curry

I would marinade it with garlic, parsley, lemon and olive oil overnight then roast it

I did a turkey thigh in a marinade from Ottolenghi cookbook using white wine, lemon juice, parsley, coriander and cumin then slow roasted it - was lovely, just a hint of spiciness and the wine and lemon tenderised it beautifully
