Have been given a turkey Leg as a friend was cleaning out her freezer and wasnt able to use.......
Hoping for some different ideas here as usually I would just roast ......
Would like to make as many meals as possible so they can be frozen to use later.
I am aware this may be on another link somewhere - but have not got the time to look at the moment. Is anybody able to point me in the right direction?
Thanks.x0 -
Why not try making a turkey pie? Here's my "recipe" but I vary it depending what's available. Most satisfying and there's usually enough mixture and pastry for a pie and a large pasty.
I usually roast a turkey drumstick/leg as per and then break it up into bite-size (depends how big your bite is!!) pieces.
While the turkey is roasting dice one medium onion and 3 or 4 rashers of bacon. Cook in pan with a knob of butter (not veg oil or olive oil, it just doesn't have the right taste) until the onion is translucent.
Add a handful of flour and give it a good stir then quickly splash in some milk and it should make a sauce around the bacon and onions.
Chuck the turkey in, grind of black pepper, no salt (comes from the bacon) and mix well.
Add more milk if needed (I'm pretty free and easy with my cooking as you can probably see).
Cook it on a low heat for about 5 mins or so to cook the flour out.
Sprinkle a bit of cheese in if you like then remove from the heat. I throw a handful of frozen petit pois or sweetcorn. The sweetness complements the bacon quite nicely.
Roll out shop bought pastry (well I've not got Nigella round for dinner!) to right the size.
Pop the base in your chosen pie dish, I use an upturned Pyrex lid, fill to the brim with the mixture.
Put on the lid and brush with milk.
Make a pasty with the mixture that wouldn't fit in the pie and use the last little bit of pastry for a little jam tart
Bake for about 35-40 mins on about Gas mark 4/5. I stick a knife in the middle and test it on the back of my hand when I think it's ready. Voila, turkey pie a la Mogkat.0 -
I did it once ( no offence, but never again!) and I cooked it allday in the SC, then roasted it off.
if you roast it stright away it can go very tough, as it is rather sinewy. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
if you have a big enough pan to fit the turkey leg in it makes a good soup then you can use the meat for anything after0

I always enjoy eating turkey leg. I cut it up into about four pieces, put it into a pot, add a sliced medium onion, salt, 2 cloves of crushed garlic and boil for about 20 minutes. I then finish off by roasting them in the oven.0

Hi lizzie,
We have an older thread on cooking a turkey leg that might help you: Turkey Leg
I'll merge your thread with it later as it helps to keep all the suggestions together.

I've got 2 of these things taking up roon in the freezer at the moment... SO my plans are for Leg number ooooooonnneeeeeee:
Slow cook and strip meat of the leg - use in curry - OH will never know it's turkey and not chicken... not very observantand freeze
Leg number twwwoooooo:
Turkey and mushroom pie - will slow cook leg first to make sure it's as tender as I can get it and then pick meat off and make pie with it I think... And hide any leftovers for future emergency mealsDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

You know when you're rooting around the bottom of the freezer and you find those things you're putting off dealing with....:o. I've found 4 Turkey Drumsticks that could do with using up. We had some earlier in the year and IIRC they were a pain to get the meat off. Any idea's for what I can do with them? Would the meat come off easier if I did them in the SC
?
TIAI have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

If you cook them in the slow cooker then the meat just falls off the bones.
Nothing is wasted either because it comes away cleanly from the bones."This site is addictive!"

Hi vivaladiva,
There's an earlier thread on cooking turkey drumsticks that should help so I've added your post to it to keep all the suggestions together.
