Just a note to the above and those of you on Orange, my phone is setup for wireless at home and in my office.

Whilst on the train this morning I browsed this thread, bbc news and another forum for 10 minutes. At lunch, I wandered round to the local shop, my phone used 1.5 meg just sat in my pocket! On the way home I did was browsing for perhaps 10-15 minutes, mainly reading a static page on various laws following a google search.

I'd say today my use has been low as I'm preparing for an exam and reading my work whilst quickly checking the news or a case.

Why am I babbling? Well Net Counter tells me today I used 18.80MB. If I continued with my little browsing, no use of youtube or opening of attachments, then I'd use 376MB.

    The 500MB seems very low.
Thanks for the info. Only having 500mb is what's putting me off going with Orange, but i have no idea if T Mobile are any good. I had a T Mobile phone a few years back and i struggled with signal.

those of you have got the handset already might need this recent software update released by htc to access some features which isnt enabled otherwise

see link on htc website http://www.htc.com/uk/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=312&act=sd&cat=all

see the other advice there for desire owners.

some might find these geekanoid videos useful about the desire http://www.geekanoids.co.uk/reviews/tag/htc

i am not sure if this contains the video how to update the googlemaps software to get multitouch in that. but there was a video on youtube showing how to do this and improve the functionality of googlemaps.

hope others update any links for any nice apps / widgets for the desire as well

The update is for the HTC Synch whihc you don't need unless you want to synch with Outlook.

As far as I can tell multitouch works by default in the latest version of Google maps, pinch to zoom in and out does anyway.

So far apps I've installed are

Speedtest - to test my download speed (best so far is 5.97 Mbps down and 0.62 Mbps up)
Netcounter - to check how much i've downloaded
    Google Sky Map
Shopsavvy - barcode scanner to check prices instore and online
Barcode Scanner - similar to above but can also be used to scan QR codes to download apps, I'm not sure yet if Shopsavvy can do that.
Google Goggles - because I want to try it out
Text to Speech - needed for Google navigation

EDIT: Just tested Google Goggles on a couple of pictures I have, it identified them both perfectly! Very impressive.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

On the more expensive tariffs you get 750Mb :

Dolphin 18 & 24 Month plans (all price points) receive "unlimited" mobile internet - 500Mb inclusive.

Panther 18 & 24 Month plans (all price points) receive "unlimited" mobile internet - 750Mb inclusive.

Shopsavvy only finds US prices I believe.

I rang orange to check my quota, I'm on the dolphin 25 18 month contract. They advise me my unlimited internet has a fair use limit of 1GB

see all the geekanoid videos (link in my prev post) and it shows you how to use googlesgoggles for getting prices (UK) by scanning books or iphone or barcodes or chocolate bars etc and where one can buy them from.

there are videos showing speech search and saying things like cake and it shows up the nearest cake shops etc.

these are the application i am interested in exploring
    • layar (free)
    • foursqaure (free)
    • googlegoggles (free)
    • beebplayer (free)
    • double twist (free) software for pc and mac for synching android phones to music / videos etc from itunes library if you have one.
    • spotify (£9.99) but will explore this only if can wrangle this for free from three :o
    • mytracks (free) if i ever get to jogging and need to check my 'exercise' against a training spreadsheet in googledocs! :rotfl:
    • does anyone know if googlewave is available for htc desire. might be very useful for agreeing evenings out / holidays etc with large numbers of people
does anyone know if one can get openoffice for android handset?

is an antivirus software essential? which ones are recommended for android phones? are any approved for the desire? how much do they cost?

please add to the android apps / widgets list suitable for the htc desire so that all users of thsi phone can benefit. thanks. now just waiting to get my hands on one and god knows when three is going to get their next stock and deliver it to me.

anyone use the recognizr app yet. is it available for htc desire???

it seems a freaky app when i read about it.
see this new application for iphone and android phones that lets you get anything on the web about a person just by pointing your phone camera at them!

    see video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GqJHaNRlas

    http://news.cnet.com/8301-13772_3-10458736-52.html

so theoretically anyone on facebook or any social networking website who share data about themselves publically can be tracked with one application just by pointing a phone camera at them!

edit: forgot to mention the new google navigation uk review on cnet and i dont know whether the copilot live ver8 will be worth the investment even if it is only £29 pounds for the uk+ireland maps.
