I bought four long-sleeved cotton tops in various colours for less than half price. It's a really good quality cotton too,so I'm very pleased.
  • I have had my eye on a large fuschia coloured glass bowl in TK Maxx for a few weeks - wanted for an indoor plant display - but I couldn't justify the price. Yesterday I spotted it in the clearance section reduced to £7. I snapped it up! I planted it up last night and am very pleased with the result, it looks really classy!

The other day I went into the grocer's to buy veggies for my kids. As I queued up I had a funny thought, I just thought 'don't buy them'...even though that left me without any veg for their tea. But it felt like a good idea so I headed home...only to find a friend waiting on my doorstep with a huge bag of veggies from her allotment for us.
  • The OH picked up a new pair of shoes in a CS yesterday - he'd been looking at the same ones in a local shop and they were £110. He got them for £5!

I was a bit more extravagant, but got a Singer hand-driven sewing machine - made in 1929, in absolutely perfect condition, with all the bits and bobbins and (fortunately) the original instruction book. £50, but I'd have paid that at least for a modern one with built in obsolescence, and features I don't need. Now to start doing something with the material and vintage patterns I've gathered up from CSs

At Kenwood House concert on Saturday we were given the following freebies - Red Magazine, 2 dining chair cushions, 2 bottles new brand chille and garlic sauce, samples of cider/fruit juice and sandwiches. :j

Obviously a better class of concert as I went to Hatfield House last Sunday and only got a Closer Magazine (at least I know now what some of these people I keep hearing about look like :rotfl:).

Also, not something I got yesterday, but used the Dulux Paintpod I got free with paint from Wilkos. Superb, so easy & no mess (glad I bought 3 now :D)

My laundry gloop making went so well that I want to share it with everyone! I had a lot of bother finding a decent recipe and method. One of the recipes that came up on Google was so poorly written and unclear that it was downright dangerous.

Equipment req. 1 v. large saucepan (stockpot is ideal)
    1 wooden spoon
    Jug
Bucket or similar v. large plastic storage container with lid.
For the gloop: 1 bar of ordinary soap, finely grated
    8 oz washing soda
8oz borax (not essential but stops gloop from foaming and acts as deodoriser)
    9 litres hot water.
A few drops of essential oils (not necessary, but add a bit of scent)
    Method.
Grate the soap as finely as you can.
Put in the large pan and add one and a half litres of boiling water, bring to a simmer on the stove and stir until dissolved. When dissolved, add the washing soda and borax and stir until this is dissolved.
Remove from heat and allow to cool SLIGHTLY then pour into bucket or other large receptacle.
Add up to 8 litres of hot water, pop lid on and allow to set in a cool place.
Mine took about eight hours to set.
When set, it will look like blancmange.
Add a small cupful directly to the DRUM of your washing machine (not the dosing drawer) with the laundry.
If you have v.smelly laundry you may wish to add a scoop of Oxy -clean type granules to the dosing drawer.
Each washload will cost me about 2p, I calculated. It would have been 1p if I hadn't used the borax. I do use fabric softener but the laundry was clean and smelled clean. It's definitely worth a try!
