I do my potato and onion like you, just layer it up and pour over stock dot it with butter and bake 150*c for 2hours. it's better with old potatoes though. Sometimes I put layers of Corned Beef in, then all you've got to do is a bit of veg and its an easy meal.
  • Can anyone please tell me how to make a potatoe bake?
I can remember having them as a child but have never made one myself. Ifs goign to be made by a novice so step by steps instructions would be post helpful. I did search the mega index but couldnt find anything
    Thanks in advance

    Hello Allie,

I'm not clear what a potato bake is, although other people will probably know. I love potato dishes so I might have a recipe. Could you describe it?

I usually put layers of sliced potato, chopped onion and chopped bacon in a casserole dish, pour on some stock and put in the oven. You could try a white or cheese sauce instead.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

As Wigginsmum but I add a bit of sliced liver or braising steak and carrots for a complete meal with no dirty pans to wash up

I've suffered so many almost raw potato bakes despite having them on a low lite for months at a time to cook through that I now par cook everything before chucking together.

Soften a sliced onion, crisp off some chopped bacon (if I fancy veggie I swap the bacon for sliced bell peppers) and sliced mushrooms in a fry pan with some oil.

Par cook some sliced potatoes in the micro for a few mins (I leave the skin on my pots)

Make up a white sause or cheat by using a jar of carbonara and a tin of mushroom soup mixed.

Pour some sauce into the bottom of a dish and add a layer of pots. Sprinkle with fry pan mixture and season well. Repeat until you run out of ingredients.

Cover the top with grated cheese and a few herbs and bake at 220 c for 30-40 mins

I've just remembered another potato dish I make in the winter which is great with loads of crusty bread to soak up with.

Soften off a sliced onion with chopped bacon and sliced sausage in a fry pan.

Add as much sliced potato as the pan will hold and pour over a tin of oxtail soup and as much gravy to cover everything. (You can move to the slo-cooker at this point if you want to leave it all day)

Simmer slowly for 30-35mins until everything is soft and the pots are just about to fall apart.

Serve in large past type bowls with loads of bread.

  • Wow this has inspired me! I'm not a good cook by any stretch of imagination but am trying a combination of the first 3 suggestions because wanted lots of veg like MATHs recipe but lower fat with no pans to wash like wigginsmum and fudgem...

So I've sliced potatoes and carrots and going to soften slightly in microwave. Will layer these at bottom of dish. Also chopped up red pepper, mushrooms, onion and bit of celery separately to add on top of the potatoes and carrots. Will also add quorn pieces to the mix before pour Kallo stock over everything and put in the oven at gas mark 7 (which is 220 I think). Will cover with herbs and perhaps mozzarella.

Does this sound like it will work?? I hope I don't make a total mess of it!
